Check for oil leaking on to the exhaust cat convertor, maybe from the power steering or down from the rocker cover. Also check your brakes for tight calipers holding the pads on, a very common problem on E-series.

is the car parked under a tree

i had this happen to my old ea a while back

found that the tree that i was parking under was letting the leaves fall into the vents

when i put the heater on for a short time the smoke and smell was bad

i had to pull the kick trim of on the passenger side and reach into the vents as best i could

it still did it after doing this but not as bad

I did some welding once near the pedal box and a lot of smoke started coming out of the vents. It tuned out the underlay was on fire, and I could harly pull it out as quick as it burned. Geeze it looked cool.
But no wonder they take the carpets out for racing, that sh%ts fammable as.

Also check your powersteering fluid, I found my rack leaking onto the cat and making nasty burning smell.

Also check your brake master cylinder. Mines leaking fluid and it's dripping down off the body onto the exhaust. And before anyone says anything it's booked in to be fixed on wednesday.

Check your powersterring belt, the adjustment pully might be jaming up and casuing the belt to burn make sure the pully is still in good condition and the bearings havent ИИИИed up. I had this wired buring smell in my car and it was the pully it screwed up and melted the belt.......

to answer your question:

no the car isnt on fire, there are the dominant symptoms of flames missing...

most likely something else making a burning smell..
