Ashtray is a good way to tell usually. If the cigarette lighter is hidden behind the ashtray its a series 1, external its a series 2 (IIRC). Or you could just tell us the build date :P

actually the ash tray isnt the best way.
mines an EF II but had the series 1 ash tray.
the Passenger mirror, does it say 'items in mirror are bigger then they appear' ?
i'm fairly sure thats one of the series II things.

or as casper said, the build date :P

yeah, there was a crossover point with the ashtray, its just a basic indication admittedly. Build date is the easiest way.

the other point is the series 1 ash trays break, so they commonly get replaced wtih the series 2 ones, so it can be a bit harder to pick
i've had 2 series 1 ones break in my car.
