Curious (probably already covered) but when the government tipped in for the new engine plant,
didn't Toyota say it would result in another 300 jobs?
I know the engine plant doesn't come on line until later thsi year but will those 300 jobs still go ahead?

Ford said that their $103 million upgrade in 2014 will also increase jobs by 300, an interesting comment...

My apologies, but I haven't seen reference to the 300 extra jobs at Ford. Any chance you've got a link for that?

Engineers and designers to get the car into production, not production line workers.

Engineers and designers are usually contracted to a particular model during its development, and then they are let go at the end of the contract.

Toyota's job cuts had to happen, they have dropped a lot of exports, mostly due to the higher aussie dollar, and they can't carry so many extra workers.

A lot of dumb journos saying the government should have "bailed" them out to save jobs, but the simple fact is they couldn't have, cause whats the point of having so many extra workers who have nothing to do, its just wasting money.

At least Fords money is going towards a new model upgrade, Toyota have already put theirs into production.

The worst part is that the job losses will be involuntarily, the first time I have heard of an auto manufacturer doing this, not including Mitsu shutting of course. Why would they rather keep people who don't want to be there rather than letting the people go who want to leave. They would have no trouble getting enough people who want a package to leave.

Having a read of the text of President Obama's latest 'State of the Union' speech is very interesting, in light of the manufacturing discussion going on in the forums for some months now:

Note he is sounding policy in a direction of bringing enterprise and jobs back to USA manufacturing, with a regulatory slant. By singling out China repeatedly we can see the currency wars begin to escalate into trade wars; any student of 1930's history knows where that leads...

The thing is, China do import a lot as well and as the Communist govt keep pegging their currency so low, it is starting to bite domestically there from an inflationary perspective. They can't keep that up forever as their exports continue to rise.

Interesting next 5-10 yrs, that's for sure.
