I think they are 7*5", the range of speakers is crap for that size so you better fitting other sizes.
You can fit 6*9's at the back if you screw them in from the bottom and 6 or 6.5" splits at the front.

All the holes are 5 x 7". They are 5x7 in the front as well. You can fit a 6, 6.5" speaker up the front. To do that, you can drill another hole and hold the speaker on by 3 screws. Or you can make a spacer, and screw the speaker on to that.

So, i'd go a set of 5x7s in the rear, something like Alpine, or JL, or Eclipse. Then some decent splits. You can mount the woofer in the A-Pillar, and get Fairmont A-Pillar moulds with the tweeter grill in it. Or you can mount the tweeter in your dash, or on your door. Or on the black plastic piece where your side mirror is.

Some brands for splits up the front are:
- Rockford Fosgate
- Pioneer
- Alpine
- MB Quart

These all range from the $200 mark to about $450. If you just want a basic system, just a 6.5" coaxial up front, or a decent 5x7, will sound fine, especially run off a headunit, with the extra power.

in my stereo(AU ute).. i have the standard ford head(kicks butt) , an alpine 4 channel 240watt amp under the passenger seat..alpine 5x7's in the doors with the component tweeters specially mounted in the corner of the door (just near the window) and kenwood 300watt 6x9's in speaker boxes bolted to the parcell shelf from the inside of the box so it cannot be moved... simply awesome systemm..get a lot of bass from the 6x9's... btw, my parcel shelf did not have any speakers holes in it

I bought 5x7's. Front and rear. They bolt straight in .Dont mess around cutting holes etc.
rears are boston acoustics. $220
fronts are JBL $180. From Strathfield.
Expensive , but its worth it for less hassles

yeah what shepv8 said, 5x7's front and rear no stuffing around just screw em in..

i got myself a set of Fusion Powerplant 5x7 splits up front, and 5x7 2ways in the rear..
and i find that you get a nicer cleaner sound with matching speakers throughout, rather then 6.5's in front and 6x9's in rear..

for the rear do you need to remove the C pillar covers?
or can the parcel shelf just slide forward once the rear seat is folded down and the clips removed??

as i want to remove my stock sub so i can stop it bottoming out as my 2 15s thump away LOL(its not even connected)

Hiya fellow revheads, I been looking everywhere for the sizes of the speaker holes in the AU, and after ringing Ford and finding them as useless as tits on a bull, i am relieved to finally see some black and white info. But alas I am still left with a question or two.
I know that the HU is presumably a Philips one, and that it is 4 x 25 watts, or something like that.
So now that leaves me wondering, do i just buy 4 5x7's, or do i get something out of a catalogue like Pioneer 6x9's for parcel shelf, and 6's in the doors?
What is the bass response like in 5x7's? ( I am not after an earthquake everytime i turn on my stereo, just a little more punch when i play a bassy track. Will it be better to stay with the standard HU or get one that matches the speakers, like Pioneer.

Any help with this would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
BTW, I drive a 2001 AUII 'S', Black, 2.5'' cat back exhaust with single Berklee muffler, soundz in'.

my recommendation would be to put 4 5x7's all round..
its what i did, so easy to do, sound is absolutely awsome.. but there really isnt much bass from them.. better off to get a 10in sub or something for bass..

and definately getting a better headunit... something with 50x4.. the stock ford deck is crap..

ask glenau, he will tell you.. he got a new sony deck on the standard speakers and was very suprised..
i got a kenwood deck, and 4 fusion 5x7's and i couldnt be happier..

Reaplace the HU, and 5x7 speakers is all you need. I run a JVC HU with Pioneer 5x7s, and I get all the bass I need. I listen to AC/DC a lot, so the bass has to be reasonable, but not doof doofy!

Thanks so much for the input so far guys.
I just got off the phone from Strathfield, i know another useless mob, and they tried to flog a a 12'' boxed sub aswell, for the meager price of ..... wait for it......... $798 !!!
My first thoughts were, YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME, I want a car stereo that sounds cool, not a freaking night club!!
Then i was also told by another mob, that the AU HU was intergrated, somehow, into the cars computer and couldn't be removed, what a joke, and now the missus is pulling in the reigns of my trusty idea steed. Not a good thing, lol.

So, 5x7's all round,eh? Do i need the 8'' sub in the parcel aswell, or is the 4 speakers fine? and do they need to be amped, coz thats also what i been told, even with the standard speakers, GET AN AMP.
So very thankful, but still a little muddled.
Much thanx so far........

to run the sub you need the double din headunit with teh stacker in it

and you need the premium sound system amp in the right side of the boot behind the covers
and all acompanying wireing

the stock premium stereo is better than most ive heard

but an aftermarket headunit is definatly a good investment (especially if you get an MP3 deck)

good luck bud

Someone obviously got mixed up between an AU and a BA with the integrated HU. Probably the first time that's ever happened.

No point amping the standard headunit with stock speakers. The stockies are only 10 or 15W, so amping them will just give worse sound.

My suggestion is to fit the 5X7s all round and see what YOU think of the sound. Adjust the bass on the headunit, and I think you will be surprised at how good it sounds. If it's not enough, then you can amp it and sub it as well. Just note that to fit an amp, you will need a decent set of Line Out Converters (LOCs) to turn the speaker wire output on the headunit into an RCA input for the amp. Mount the LOCs as close to the amp as you can - ie legthen the speaker wire rather than using long RCAs. (This advice comes from Pyroay, an award winning audio enthusiast).

Pioneer make a set of 5x7s for around $150 a pair - I have them in my car and I am more than happy with them, but there are plenty of brands and prices around - here's the list I posted in another thread.

Speakers: Listed in rough price order
Aerpro APS57 @ around $20 - $25. They are better than standard but that's about it.
Kicker 05ES68 @ $99
JBL GTO8626 @ $129
Pioneer TSA 5713 @ $149
Clarion SRC5715 @ $149 (Use Quick Product Search to search on SRC5715)
Boston S85 @ US$120 (approx $160)
Polk Audio DB570 @ US$120 (approx $160)
JL Audio TR570-CXi @ $189 and the ZR570-CSi (Special order) @ $1489 pair - not a misprint!!
Boston NX87 @ US$180 (approx $240)
JBL P75 @ $249.00.
Clif Designs PX5.7 @ $249.00.
Phoenix Gold TX57.0COAX @ $249.00.
Polk Audio MMC570 @ US$200 (approx $265)
Blaupunkt TSx 573 (couldn't get a price for these)
Rockford Fosgate T682S/T1682S this is a 6x8 which apparently fits in the 5x7 space - somehow. Couldn't find a price easily.
Infinity REF6810CS this is a 6x8 but lists 5x7 as well!?! No price.
Eclipse SE8375 No price.
Alpine SPR-571A No price.
Alpine SPR-57LS & SPR-57LP No price.

I have the Pioneer and am very happy with them. Also, most 6" and some 6.5" speakers will also fit in the 5x7 holes in the doors and parcel shelf, but obviously you would need to drill new screw holes to mount them and you need to be sure they are not too deep. I had a pair of 6.5" US Audio speakers in the front of my AU1 XR6.

Once again, thank you for all of your help, and JC THANKS HEAPS for the speaker list, if i can't get a set or 2 out of that, well frankly, i needn't bother with another post about this matter at all............ LMFAO PMSL.
Well it looks like I might be getting a new HU after all:

http://www.repcoshop.com.au/ASP/Cata...age3.asp#Start

Its the top left one, so please let me know if its any good from the specs, or if you own it, let me know how it is.
I like the look of the JBL 5x7's, i can get them for about $120 a pair.
As a sound engineer myself, I know that JBL are a reputable brand and an excellent source when it comes to sound stage equipment, but as I am not an Auto Electrician, I am not sure about the car audio side of the company.
If i can get a decent enough bass out of this setup , I will be truly happy with the price, as the only install i will have to pay for will be the HU.

Hope to hear back from you all soon, once again THANKS HEAPS.

JC,

Does the wagons use the same size speakers in the rear as the sedans?

'67 - the rears are 4" round, I think (about 90% sure). Just pop the speaker cover off and measure them - the cover comes off very easily.

xr6007 - Yes.

If your going to go a fairly good system, be sure to get splits up front. And use 5x7s for the rear fill.

Otherwise if you just want a nice replacement system, that you can turn up and not cost you too much. Do as JC suggested and get all aftermarket 5x7s, and for a bit of volume, you'll need an amp, or a headunit (or both).

Cheers
