Cold Air Intake.

I'm looking into my options for setting up my cold air intake and I'm liking the sound of a 3" stainless setup running into a 70MM Throttle Body. The only question is whether or not it is illegal (Queensland Law) to run a pod filter in the air filter box. I know its certainly illegal without it as it can catch fire due to the heat, but the filter would certainly be protected from the excessive heats that cause the to catch fire; wouldn't they?

I'm just concerned as to whether or not its illegal to have it in the air filter box. I know it can be done easily enough.

its ileagal to have it showing but if you have it in the box should be no dramas

To my knowledge provided it is contained within a box that is sealed (anything that has a proper casing can be called a 'airbox' and get you out of any trouble with the boys in blue). Putting a pod within the factory airbox is a common step and thankfully the falcon airbox on an AU/EF etc. is big enough to fit a sizeable pod with a bit of effort if you set it up right. I also can't see how someone on the street looking at a factory airbox would know what is inside it anyway....

Cheers mate, thats the sort of info that I'm looking for. The plan with mine is to cut part of the top out and to replace it with red perspect.

Hi guys...

if you put a pod filter in the factory air box and attach a bigger snorkel (Tickford e.g.) does it change the air intake sound if you give the Falcon the boot or is it silenced due to the fact that it is hidden inside the air box ?

I would also like to know what an impact the bigger snorkel would have ?

Here in vic, you can have the pod filter exposed so long as it is sitting in the bottom of the air box (it doesn't need the lid)
I would think the law would be much the same

the problem isnt the "fire hazard".. its more related to EPA than a defect. EPA victoria states you can only have one induction mod. so if you fit an aftermarket snorkel, and a pod in the factory box, technically. youre flagged.

You can just run a pod open air in victoria, however the pod filter *MUST* be firmly attached to the chassis with a brace. this is a defectable item.

Every state is slightly different however, so its best to ask your local RTA.

im unsure about queensland law but in nsw a police officer does have a right to ask to have a look in your airbox and around your engine for anything defectable. it happened to one of my mates. in saying that me and my mates are p platers (albeit very responsible). having a red or green plate is like having a giant red or green target on the front and rear of your car. aslong as you have it in the air box and keep it looking as stock as you can you will be right.
