That's exactly the response I got when I questioned them at my local RTA Registry.

That all seems innocent enough doesnt it.
But - years ago I had a Torana hatchback stolen. Those days, they were able to type hatch in the box, so that's how it was registered. Years passed, and the car was lost, as far as I was concerned. A friend in WA actually found the car on an enthusiast site in a "build" thread. He saw the mods that he and I made some 20 years ago! After initial excitement, I found that the car had initially been found in outback WA, and was held in a police yard. A year passed, and it was then legally auctioned off with police plates to this fella. He registered it in WA, and they put SEDAN on the rego. I never gave up searching in the first 5 years you know, and the SA police tried as hard as they could for me searching data bases. Remember data bases were crap back then too. No Torana HATCHBACK was ever found fitting the description going by rego checks... So a harmless thing now, but who knows down the track. Not quite the same league. An SS hatchback goes for around $60K these days!! ****es me off that they are so limited, and lazy for that matter that they cant "type" hatchback. Oh, in case you're wondering, no I never got it back. All legal it seems, regardless of proof of previous ownership.

will have to see if s.a. rego is the same. got a permit in nsw on the weekend and they gave me the same story. he even turned his pc screen around so i could see. no code for hatchback.
most rego companies are about 10yrs behind the 8 ball though. motor reg in s.a. took forever to get eftpos/credit card system. used to have to pay cash all the time. |
