You know if you weren't so hellbent on an 'us Vs. them' mentality you might actually learn something.

This thread is centered around the Rudd Government's second attempt at an economic stimulus package, not tax cuts to individuals or small business. This package is coming from borrowed money, the Government is not contracting Government spending to return tax dollars back into the economy.

It is not borrowed money, it is money the Government will not 'collect'.

Far out.. you've got a serious chip on your shoulder that's blinding you from seeing the facts...
The really sad thing is elections are decided on peoples "interpretation" of these things, regardless of how wildly ill informed their take on it is.

i dont get a choice about my tax being removed from my pay. once the financial year is complete the exact amount is decided and i am refunded any money that i am owed. so everyone gets a 'gift' every year if thats your definition. but its not is it, im simply being refunded PART of what i paid. if the government spent that money and needs to borrow it doesnt change that. its still a tax rebate no matter how you want to cut it. which makes it identical to the small business tax cuts.

It is not a tax rebate, it is not a tax cut. The stimulus package isn't part of any tax mechanism just as the last package wasn't. It is not identical to tax cuts to small business or individuals otherwise, funnily enough, it would be called a tax cut.

I cant see the why some people on here who own their own business are whinging about the $900 'handout'

I tend to see it from both sides. I'm a wage earner and my wife has her own business, and like most small business's in this area she is hoping that the $900 will be spent locally.

This obviously wont happen with everyone who gets it, but if some people do, local stores will be able to keep up their profit margins and not have to layoff staff.

Thats exactly right. We all know that this will financially ruin us long term but the fact is that businesses will die and many people will face unemployment if there is nothing done in the short term to promote local spending again.

A long term solution is also needed, such as redmund's idea to decrease our reliance on importing of goods and increase our own local manufacturing and as well as many other ideas to increase our own stability and independence. But that will be a long way off from taking effect unfortunately.
