Default Spitfire up for auction

Bonhams and Goodman auctioneers in NZ are having a WW2 Spitfire going up for auction in September.

Being an historian buff and loving anything that is related to military vehicles etc this would be unreal, I just love Spittys.

If I was Lindasy Fox I'd be over there in a flash, cash in hand. If I had to I'd even sell my GT collection (if I had one, dream on).

On the ABC Collectors last night they had on a boat collector and he had a speed boat with a Rolls Royce Spitty engine in it, boy did it flog and huge flames from the pipes, 100mph plus on water.

I have a soft spot for the Spitfires too. They are a marvel of a plane, the likes of which we will never see again. I just can't seem to convince the Minister of Finance and Warfare that I need to go for a ride in one.

I saw that on ABC last night. It was epic!

But yeah, awesome plane. My grandfather used to fly these in the day, would be great to own one.

mmmm...

27 liter, V12, double overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder, sodium filled valves, and force fed - doesn't sound like 1940's tech - more like a modern engine!!!

Sound of a Spitfire over green English countryside, the white cliffs of Dover and Vera Lynn, "We'll meet again." Would love to own one.

Who was that Aussie veteran cricketer that got asked how he thought moden crickiters coped with the pressures of today? His response was "Pressure, what do they know about pressure? Pressure is 350 mph in a Spitfire at 100ft with a ME109 right up your Ar$e."

Love the Spitfires, but love the Republic P47 too, check the specs out.

"Power came from a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp two-row 18-cylinder radial engine producing 2,000 hp (1,500 kW) and turning a four-bladed Curtiss Electric constant-speed propeller 146 inches (3.7 m) in diameter. The loss of the AP-4 prototype to an engine fire ended Kartveli's experiments with tight-fitting cowlings, so the engine was placed in a broad cowling that opened at the front in a "horse collar"-shaped ellipse. The cowling admitted cooling air for the engine, left and right oil coolers, and the turbosupercharger intercooler system. The engine exhaust gases were routed into a pair of wastegate-equipped pipes that ran along each side of the cockpit to drive the turbosupercharger turbine at the bottom of the fuselage about halfway between cockpit and tail. At full power, the pipes glowed red at their forward ends and the turbine spun at 60,000 revolutions per minute. The complicated turbosupercharger system with its ductwork gave the XP-47B a deep fuselage, and the wings had to be mounted in a relatively high position."

BTW, I bet David Lowey from Temora air field puts his money in for the Spitfire thats up for auction.
