Default Changing Alternator

My alternator is not charging the battery properly.
I have a brand new 6cyl alternator ( e-bay bargain I couldn't resist )which I have been told has the same internals as the V8 one, the only difference being the housing.
I bought a 2nd hand V8 alternator and was just going to swap the internals over.
1st step remove pulley.
How do you remove the pulley?
It just spins. I don't want to put it in a vice as it will damage the pulley.

Has anyone attempted this before and if so was it successful

Hold the pulley with your hand, use a rag to help, then undo with a rattle gun.

I've removed lots of pulleys over the years.

Simplest way is to use your vice but use a pair of "soft jaws" - I've got a pair of aluminium ones that I made many moons ago. A couple of bits of ply, or rubber or something like that will do (obviously you'll use the soft jaws between the edge of the pulley and the vice jaws).

All you're trying to do is stop the pulley from spinning so any of the above will do.

Once you've got the pulley firmly held in the vice, undo the nut by using a ring spanner on the nut and smacking it with a hammer. This will "shock" the nut and will be easy to undo once it's loosened.

If the pulley spins in the vice when you smack it, just nip it up a bit.

I've never broken/damaged a pulley doing that way.
