Default Boot Garnish Lighting

I was wondering what everyone out there thought of the idea of making the F A L C O N letters on the boot garnish light up at night? I have looked around the forums and either no one's done it or I can't use the search function very well! :togo:

First of all - do people think it would look cool? I was thinking of doing mine to light up blue to match the Narooma blue of my XR, or possibly red to act as a third park light...

Secondly, I have been doing some thinking about how to do it, and I think the easiest way would be to pull the garnish off and see if I can cut enough out of the back to replace the letters with frosted perspex, and put the LEDs behind that. The other way you could do it would be take a mould of the whole garnish, cast one out of clear resin and only paint the parts that wouldn't show light through them (ie leave the lettering paint free), and frost the lettering. Then the whole garnish would be a prism, which you could shine enough LEDs through from the ends to bounce the light off the frosting.

Sometime soon I'm going to photoshop a photo to look like what I was thinking - I'll post it up when I've done it.

Anyone got any ideas? Does this sound like a stupid idea?

Yeah it would be cool, but I'm not too sure what Mr Plod would say about them though.

I'm sure it will be deemed Illegal to be honest... unless you hook it up to seperate switch than the taillights...

I think it would fall under the same catagory as under car neons... plus would look bad as a brake light compaired to a parker... plus IMO... will blur to much for drivers to read it if as bright as a brake light...

And thankyou for the idea... just came up with one very similar to yours... but up a notch...

if it comes up with the tail lights it would be in that lost grey area. I dont think they would pick on it if its not in your face bright but matches the tail lights for intesity

if its red they wouldnt have a problem but change it to other colours and they might. It really depends on 2 things.... 1 how well you can talk to police 2 if it matches the colour of your car.... and refer to number 1

Aha - the scheming starts..... : C'mon let me know if it'll impinge on my copyright at least!!

In a partial answer to legality - I will of course have the LEDs on a separate switch so I can control them separately if I get told to turn them off!
