Hey guys,
I know it's possible to have the carrying capacity increased via engineers report etc. But can the same be done for the towing capacity? The auto is rated at 2300kg and the manual at 1600kg. Where is the week link in the manual? and can it be reengineered to 2300kg? ORB>

Road rules were made nationally-uniform in 1999 or 2000. I remember this especially because my boss had not long bought a bigger yacht. He had to sell his Falcon to buy a Nissan Patrol as the Falcon's legal towing capacity in NSW under the old state rules was about 1600kg. I think the NSW limit then was 100% of the towing vehicle's unladen weight.
He was extremely pi55ed off at the rule change as he didn't like the Patrol much compared to the EF Fairmont wagon he sold.

In practice it's the lower of the legal limit and the manufacturer's spec, some fourbies have a spec that's over the legal limit. Anyway we've strayed from your question, the 1600kg spec for the manual is way under the legal limit.
My guess is that the clutch won't take much slipping under load. OTOH some 4WD'ing mates say that the 5th gear in many boxes is fairly weak. The conventional wisdom is that towing heavy loads in a fourbie is best done in 4th even when the speed is high enough to use 5th. But I stress these are only guesses.

JC would be the one to get in touch with regarding the issue of towing with manuals.

yep the weakest link is the the clutch and g/box,Ive looked into this before, put an auto in it and you will be covered through insurance and legally.
Ive stated before,Ive asked my insurance company about tow capacities for my old AU xr6 manual ute( I use to tow car trailers with it no problems) and even before Id finished the sentence they answered the question 1600kg manual 2300kg auto, as I think its one of there red tape outs to get out of claims. regards David

I know the manual with a heavy duty clutch can tow 3000kg(bobcat on a trailer). I wouldnt say its legal or recommend it though lol. Ive also pulled a 16,000kg prime mover about 2km little un-settling knowing theres only 6feet of chain between you and a dirty great big bullbar lol.
AU XR6 5speed here to by the way. |

on another forum i'm a member of someone has got a patrol re-engineered to increase the gcm, basically meaning that the car can only carry the same, but you can tow more, so i would think it's possible, what was involved i don't know
*edit; not sure if you can look at this without being a member, but this is the thread http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showt...&highlight=gvm i'd think it should also be possible on a falcon Last edited by bodes-sh; 08-03-2008 at 10:39 PM. |
