I have an AU11 Fairmont and all of the controls on the steering wheel have stopped working (Cruise Buttons/Audio Volume Controls and Air Bag). There is a flashing air bag light on the instrument cluster. Has anyone heard of this before?

Yep, sounds like your clockspring which is located between the steering wheel and column has broken, therefore not sending power to your airbag and wheel switches. Will need to get it replaced and the codes cleared. Then your back in business

Yes it sounds very much like the clock spring. I just replaced mine on the weekend - it had exactly the same symptoms. a new clock spring is about $180 from Ford and is a piece of cake to fit. There are plenty of threads giving very detailed instructions on how to fit them. the main important thing is it requires removing the airbag and so there are some safety precautions you need to take such as disconnecting the battery at least 10 minutes before you disconnect the airbag.
Other than that its a simple job - you might need to make a tool (slotted screwdriver) to remove the airbag as the proper tool - 5 star secure torx bit - seems near impossible to buy... |
