Default C4 under a Capri?

Hello All,
Does anyone have a C4 transmission under their Capri?

In trying to install the 302 and C4 I seem to have trouble with the transmission hitting the top of the tunnel even when trying to lift the engine from below.

If you have a C4 under your Capri did you have to cut the tunnel at all or have I just got the whole box and dice too far back?

Thanks & regards, Jim...

I think my V8 project has a C4 in it....I'm not too familar with these as I bought the car with the engine and box fitted. I'll try and take some pics on the weekend and post them on Monday.

Was your Capri a 4 cyl body?

I had an FMX under the tunnel of a V6 body.

That would be great thank you. I got it up and in last night by removing the front pulley off the crank as its a very large P/S type. This allowed the engine to move forward enough. I also had to remove the sway bar mounting brackets to stop the alternator and power steering pump fighting with them on the way up.

The rear of the gearbox is just forward of the integral cross member and it is touching the top of the tunnel up the front (reshaping with a hammer should sort that out).

I contemplated dropping the engine down a bit to cure that problem but the bottom of the sump is exactly the same height as the bottom of the cross member so having the sump lower would not be a good thing.

I just had a quick look and it looks like the top of the trans tunnel was massaged about an inch or so. The motor is a pretty fit. I reckon there is only an inch btwn the front crossmember and the front pulley. I can't find my camera at the moment, but worse come to worse I use my phone camera (which is not the best)

This is about as good as I could get, sorry. Looks like the tranny needs a new sump gasket.

Ahh thanks for that. Yep it looks like my engine is the same place as yours fore-aft wise.

I had to remove the fan belt pulley off my engine as it has the large dual pulley for P/S but with a standard pulley my clearance would be about an inch.

I see your transmission also came out of a column shift car going by the linkage still attached.

A friend of mine used the CRS chassis kit + mounts and had to do a cutout to clear front pulley. Can't remember the trans tunnel ,might been a slight massage at the top from memory

I also forgot to mention that my engine mounts are dimensionally the same as the CRS ones but the CRS mounts are really only designed to fit a 4 cylinder front cross member. Yes you can fit them to a v6 member but you would have to cut a good deal of the strength out of where the extra two cross member mounting points are.

I designed and built mine so that they fit neatly onto the V6 cross member.

The only benefit to using a V6 x-member is for registration in some states. To be honest most RTA people wouldn't know the difference anyway.
The chassis kit and crossmember on my car is totally custom. Its done really well and uses the standard factory bolt holes (4cyl) and it even has a check out around the steering bush.

Don't despair. I didn't butcher a V6 cross member. I bought a V6 car in 1994 and it had this "V8" cross member in it.

The previous owner had welded flat plates on top of the V6 mountings an then just welded V8 Falcon mount plates on top of that.

It was rough as guts and had so much weld on it I could not remove it and save the V6 mounts so I removed the whole lot by drilling the spot welds.
