Computer has no sound

Hey,
My sister cant get the sound to work on her puter, any ideas?

Its a Dell Dimension 3100

Specs:

Pentium 4 processor at 3.0Ghz
160Gb SATA Hard Disk
1Gb DDR2 Ram
Onboard Graphics/Sound
CD-Rom Drive
USB 2.0 Front/Rear
Ethernet 10/100
Expansion - 1*SATA Hard Disk, 2*PCI Cards
Windows XP Professional
ZoneAlarm Security suite

what is Onboard Graphics/Sound mean???

any ideas

That's the sound card.

Make sure it is not muted, and that it is installed correctly. Check under 'Device Manager' to make sure sound card components don't have a conflict symbol. Also, go through 'Control Panel' and into the sound section. Check your hardware to make sure it is listing the sound device, and not shaded out.

You may need to run the driver disc.

Onboard sound just means that instead of having a seperate sound card installed, that it comes off the motherboard.

Is the cable plugged into the right hole??

If the sound has worked in the past, start with the simple things first.

For external speakers, are they pugged in to the right hole/all the way? Is the volume turned up on the speakers? If the speakers are powered, is there power? Do the speakers work at all (maybe they're busted) try pugging them in to the headphone jack of an ipod/stereo.

Look at volume settings within Windows, including mute. There are a couple of main volume controls you will need to make sure are turned up, 'Master' and 'Wave'.

Does the music/sound she is trying to play normally work? That is, perhaps she's trying to play a CD that has a giant scratch on it. Try playing an MP3 file that is known to be good.

If none of these, try turning the computer off and on.

If it still isn't working, come back to the forums because it might be more complex (such as drivers).
