Good writeup, it's interesting to hear of the everyday things that usually aren't talked about

I have heard that Americans basically have their meals backwards to ours, in that they will all sit down and have a huge feed for brekky, with egg,s bacon, pankcakes, muffins, snags etc each day of the week?

this stuff always interest me alot and i have some questions for u. Have u found you have/are losing ur aussie accent at all? Eg ur firends back home can tell when u talk to them on the phone.
Do the yanks make a big deal about it, eg say "wow are u an aussie" or can they tell strieght away?

It sounds like ur married but, do the ladies love the aussie accent?
What do u do over thier?
Have u shown them AFL and V8's and if so what do they think?
Finally are they do u find the yanks in gerneral to be more up tight and stressed then aussies?

its always very interesting to read about the real everyday lifestyle of other countries , get to know things from a different angle than the normal beat ups from the mass media, political b.s. , etc.

keep up the updates with plenty of comparisions between here and there and some of the stuff they do that we wouldnt think of.

good to hear the young bloke is settling in ok , just dont let him forget his aussie-isms.

congrats mate... glad to see everything is working out...
im thinking of doing something similar myself, in 12 months or so...
Got a few qs myself…
Hows the money situation? Like is it expensive compared to over here? how far does your money go?
Hows the car scene over there?
Are you planning on going to SEMA or something?
What are the communities like? Are they full estate type areas like we have over here?
Its good to hear about the non documented stuff, instead of the shootings and roadside drugbusts in daddies merc… lol
Sorry about the novel, just really interested in all this…
Congrats again…

Interesting read, mind if i ask how you went about organising your move in the first place? ie did you secure a job beforehand (what line of work are you in?), visa/residence permit, etc?

My best mate is from the US and after 14years, he STILL has his accent. Gonna go to Mexico with him next year. Very sad...He lost his mum in 9/11. She was on the floor (just above or below) where the plane entered the trade centre.

Money situation all depends on how much you earn, I personally think everyday things and consumer goods are very cheap compared to Australia. I am on a pretty good wicket (6 figure plus). Shopping is pretty cheap, HOWEVER, unless you have good insurance for health care, like a decent work one or your own personal one a couple of trips to the hospital would bankrupt you, Lachlan cut his leg open and we went to the emergency room, now it wasnt bad, no injections or anything and the equivelant of a bandaid and a thanks for coming... 900 bucks!!! Lucky I have brilliant health care and it was all covered, however I would hate to imagine people without health care.!!

Car scene is very good and you will always seet meets or gatherings and its pretty wild, so much American muscle everywhere. Cars are dirt cheap over here, and a LOT of the manufacturers offer 0% finance, YES thats a ZERO!!..However apart from teh Muscle cars most are either small FWD cars or giant gas guzzling bloody SUV's. There are a lot of cars running around on 22"s here as well, and they all have stupid 22" badges above the wheel arches almost like a HEY look at me, come steal my wheels lol..

Communites, well I am in Sacramento the capital of California, however its very much like Melbourne or Sydney or any other major city, however 20 minutes out of town and you really are back into the farming areas, its pretty cool yet I was stunned when I first got here, there is SO SO MUCH open land and agricultural areas...I havent felt unsafe here once, However my mates a copper so if we are out and he has his kids with him and I have mine I know both he and his missus are carrying loaded hand guns, He Doesnt go anywhere without it.....so I have nothing to be afraid of. I will say Identity theft here is HUGE.. Two people at the office have been hit 10k each on their corporate credit cards... Both Amex and the Company are like yeah OK its fine...here are new credit cards, try to be a little more careful!..We have invested in a schredder so NO personal information from the mail is left to be discovered.

I was head huntered, basically made an offer I didnt want to say no to, they made all the arrangements, hooked me up with Attorney's and Immigration lawyers, I am currently in the US on a E3 Visa, its for highly skilled workers, mostly in the IT area. They arranged everything and I basically showed up at the US consultate and they gave me a visa. The company I work for then arranged freight of my goods to the USA and booked us flights over. What work I do, well I am a SAP Functional Consultant and I specalise in HR/Payroll and some Financials. (computer nerd).

We are off to a American Wedding tomorrow so thats something different as well.

Hi Craig,

Mate I remember reading your post a few months ago when your boy was homesick, and that thread has stuck in my memory, so I'm glad to hear that things are working out well for you mate.

Yeah, the States is definetley different, I did quite a few trips for work a few years back and even got down to Mexico (I too am a computer geek).

And the wifes best froend lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. Every couple of months, my wife sends a package over with vegemite, cadbury chocolate, tim tams, jam, arnotts biscuits and heaps of magazines !!! Just can't get anything simiar over there. Even fresh pumkin is rare for some reason???

Anyway good to hear that all is going well. Oh, we just got a package from the US from this friend of ours last week.... scored some Ford merchandise that you can't get here in Aus..... you'll have to check it out.

All the best.

PS. Is the name on your Rego plates your surname? Or company name?

Sam

Contraband…The Seppos have banned it because it contains folate. This could just about end up putting her friend in jail.
