Default Mounting a Scanner to the roof...

Hey guys,

The other day i was sitting in my car at the airport waiting to pickup the old man and listening to my air-band hand held scanner. Since im a pilot i like to listen in to the ATC from time to time. Now since i was a little bored i held the scanner to the ceiling near the map lights and had an idea. I would like to be able to mount the scanner to the ceiling, but be able to remove it at a later date. so i was wondering if anyone had pics of the map light thingy removed and from the back, plus the hole it'll leave. I want to make a bracket that mounts to the back of it, and slides in flush, so im willing to cut into the map light thing to make it look flush and out when i want to mount the scanner. I've attached pics of what i'm looking at doing and if anyone could give me idea of what to use to mount the scanner it would be greatly apprechiated. BTW the scanner has a belt clip on the rear that i want to use if possible.

Pic 2

Thanks Guys

Nick

just a thought why don't you see if you can get a scanner that fits a single din slot and get a single din HU would look neat and no need to mod your roof console they are a pain to remove this is one option http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.st...uct/View/D1863

for the sake of spending that much, i'm sure you'd be able to make up some sort of bracket that can attach between the map lights and the roof lining, with the bolts that hold the light on....probably cost about $5 - $10 for a bit of metal, bend it to the right shape, drill a couple of holes in it, remove the lining, bolt it up and away you go

Ok well first off the map light thingy doesn't have bolts it's a clip fit into the roof lining, just pulls out, the other part is actually riveted to the hood lining (at least it is on my car) given the size of the scanner you have I'd look around for one of the ford mobile phone holders (the ones that fold away into the consol when not in use) be more convienient to use and less obtrusive to fit

I haven't had a look but I think there's a website called www.consoles.com.au .... or something along those lines ... they usually do roof console for 4WDs for scanners and the like .... but it might give you a few ideas to make one ... or they may make one similar to what you need.

Hope this helps.

i guess i'd be up for changing the console if it came to it. i'd prefer to have a clean look, not a steel bracket drilled into the roof.

thanks for the info umineko, probably not gonna use that idea now as i dont know if t could hold the weight

Im assuming mate you dont have the sunnies holder on your lights? When I drove up to Lancelin with a mate I just dumped the hand held in that. Was high up enough that you can hear it go off even with music going. Maybe you can chuck in one of them somehow?

yeah thoht of that too. got sunnies holder in there tho which is bummer but i do use it. Im gonna se about getting another one and modifing it to hold a CB/scanner unit with remote head if i can find one that does 108 - 136 mhz. failing that i'll see what i can rig up for the handheld, with a transmitter into the radio.....
