I'm about to reformat the pc and I chucked away the cd cover with the product key on it. Smart move. Any idea how to search the computer to find out the product key from the computer so i can write it down.
Thanks |

You might find a key generator at www.keygen.us - It'd pay to have agood firewall installed but having said that you're going to reformat the computer anyway. Some key generators contain malware etc.

CALL Microsoft before you format (you might need to wait until Monday). Any other means and you are likely to end up with a machine that won't qialify for "Genuine Advantage".

I'd suggest these forums aren't used for what amounts to piracy. There's alegit way to go about it for legit means. |

We had a HP before and never again. Custom made FTW! Even with how old this computer is (which is probably way superceeded), it still goes strong which is more than what could be said for our HP. We literally chucked that in the bin. |

hp desktops don't come with a cd, they have a seperate partition that you can boot to at startup or you can create a restore dvd in windows

You 'Should' have a sticker on the side of the case with the number. If you are part of the MS Sales Program each install needs to have a sticker placed on the PC/laptop. All 'licensed' sellers must comply. If you don't have the sticker it's not legit. That MS rules/agreement.

Whilst were on the topic........
I just bought an XP pro upgrade disk to upgrade 2 of my notebooks from XP Home to XP Pro, and to also update an old desktop from 2000 to XP pro. Anyway, the desktop worn upgrade. Its says that the current system has no path to XP Pro and that there was an error. Can 2000 be upgraded? (mine is actual "2000 server edition with N.T technology!") Or perhaps some files are missing on the computer? Any ideas please.

Tunder,
windows 2000 server cannot be upgraded to xp as it is a "server" operating system and no a desktop os... if you have a copy of windows 98 ect you can do a "cleen install" with the upgrade disk... it will just ask to see your old windows disk.... you give it one of those and vulla cleen instaLL

If your hard drive fails, then not only do you lose your pron and data, you also lose the means of restoring windows back again. Nice one HP. Isn't it a shame that sarcasm doesn't come across on Forums?
