Default Met a Virtuoso!

:

That's right, one of my favorite, actually my favorite Guitarist. John Petrucci of Dream Theater.

I attended the G3 concert (Satriani, Vai and Petrucci) on the weekend and also attended the John Petrucci/Dave LaRue clinic that they put on at Oxley College in Chirnside Park last night.

The clinic was the most amazing experience, far better than a concert. To be able to talk to and get feedback and advise in a very personal setting is something i won't forget, not when you deal with guys like this. They are true masters of their instruments, virtuoso's.

Anybody else attend these events?

Lucky Bugger, its awesome enough to watch that level of talent, let alone having them show you "how to do it" Well done.

If only Mr. Scary could have been on the agenda, and Stevie Ray Vaughan hadnt taken that helicopter ride.

How, how nerve racking is it playing in the presence of someone like that?

I'd liken it to taking Craig Lowndes for a lap around bathurst....

I can't believe it, I was going to make this exact same thread!

I was there as well with my mate Juz.

I shook his hand and got my CD cover for Metropolis Pt. 2 signed

It was bloody amazing! John Petrucci is one of my idols and by far my favourite guitarist. Now we just need Dream Theater to tour like that guy from Eastgate music said at the end.

Likewise here Ash. Petrucci is my favorite now by far. Just my type of music and playing style.

I am seriously considering getting one of his Ernie Ball guitars.

hehe, yeah i think everybody waited to meet and get stuff signed. I didn't have anything with me, not realising that they were going to do a signing, i was just going to get him to sign my shirt, but in the end just got the ticket sign.

Mate, we can only hope they'll come. I'd don't care how much they charge, as long as they can get them here, i'll pay whatever! I'm sure they'll be heading over, coz it seems to me that Portnoy/Petrucci were testing the waters here and sussing out the support. Why else would Portnoy come all this way just to play 6 songs at G3??? Got to be more to it. I hope!

anyway, here's some pics, won't upload many coz they're basically all the same and it wasn't the best camera by the looks of it, despite being an 8mpx.

Love the Mesa Boogies too... might trade the 5150's in on one! :evilking:

I let this gig pass. I seen Vai several times already - He is awesome
Satch - boring as batshit behind his wah wah.
Petrucci - he's good but I prefer Michael Romeo's playing

I wish Dream Theater would come down here, that would be special

Maybe if it was somewhere other than the Horden I may have attended. Besides that, I saw Yngwie just a few weeks ago and hung out with the man. That's enough for me

Yeah, when I heard they were going to be signing autographs I rushed out to my car during the break to grab whatever DT CD I could find. As it turns out I had my favourite one in the boot, Metropolis Pt2. I wish I had taken my RG, but then again I probably wouldn't want to play it again after getting it signed by the great man

Yeah I would pay anything to see them play. For the time being the live DVDs will have to do. I hope they were impressed with Aus!

How good was Portnoy at G3? I spent almost as much time watching him as I did John! He's amazing.

Hey Stugots

Satch boring, that's an interesting observation, never heard that before of him. Fair enough though, it's what ever presses the right buttons i guess.

I also saw YM when he was last out here, few years ago at Palace? Didn't think much of it at all, he was actually a real rude pr!ck to his staff etc and the his repetative music becomes music slush after about 4 songs. He does have several songs that i do really like the sound of though.

That pic, is that recent?? That looks like a pic of him from quite a few years back.

same here. He is an amazing pig skin slapper that's for sure. I found myself watching him too, how could you not, he demands attention.. hehehe. It was funny watching him persist with throwing his drum stick over his head and trying to catch it... stuffed up most of the time and ran out of sticks at one point. Had to get his pleb to bring out a refill.

That keyboardist/guitarist for Vai is damn amazing too, can't remember his name.

that pic was at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney 3 weeks ago. He's got the make up on prior to coming out on stage which might explain the look. :

Yeah, Yngwie's as subtle as a sledgehammer when it comes to letting people know what he thinks, I remember his last tour and how awful the sound was and the other dramas but since then he's stopped drinking, smoking and having a support act (which was a big factor in the nastiness of the last tour).

Satch when he played at the Enmore a few years ago I found boring for the exact reasons you pointed out about YJM. His playing sounded all wishy-washy and monotonous under the wah wah, too many Kirk Hammett double stops and not much clarity which was disappointing because he's alot better than that.

You after a Dual Rectum Fryer? I used to have a Mesa/Boogie TriAxis and 20/20 power amp. Loudest 20 watts I've experienced. Make sure you sound proof that room!

Was it Tony MacAlpine? Little bald black guy? He's one of my favourite guitar players.

hi all

I also went to JP's clinic and it was fantastic. I got my my 'awake' tab book signed inside the cover, then i wished him all the best and shook his hand. If only i had taken my steve morse dvd, becuase dave larue plays bass on it.

IMO the G3 show alsum, but just a little bit to loud...yes i no it sounds stupid (cant b to loud), mayb it was just were ash (kenaz) and myself were sitting, but it just seemd the guitars were so distorted it almost ruined the sound. I went and saw satch last yr on tour and it wasnt as loud, and sounded so much better.

JPs sound the other night was fantastic though. Im so glad i went. All i did was go into billy hydes during there sale, and i spoke to a sales guy and he asked me what gear i have and what music im into, then when he found out i was goin to G3 he offerd me 2 tix to the clinic. Seemd way to easy for something like that. I would have payed good money to see that, and considering he played (i think) 4 songs, it was just like seeying him live again!

BTW vai's guitarist/keyboarder is tony macalpine. He is in a band with derek sheranian (ex dream theater keyboardest) and virgil donati (ex vai drummer) and there called planet X.

Now i have to find out when brett garsed is doing some clinics, and then wait for paul gilbert!!!

I went to the 3G concert in Brisbane and thought it was a blast. I thought Vai had a good group around him. Especially Bobby the base player, man he could work that thing. I'm also a fan of Craig Chaquico.
