Yeh modern DSG and SMG etc will give u faster shifts than manual but it still lacks control, epecically around corners.
Dads got both the new and old m5's and i can tell u the old ones better to drive purely because of the manual vs the smg in the new one........and if u dont find manual fun then learn to heel-toe....

My friends cousin owns a brand new M5... and he owned the previous model.. it had quad three inch exhausts :o twin BMC CDA's..
****!!!! the sound that thing made. Sounded like a mix between a ferrari 355 and a v8 supercar.

My car has intuitive full control over every gearshift, my car is prepared for every corner and is always in the right gear for acceleration out of corners. If not, it goes right into the right gear when I want it to.
It has factory grade control logic that helps engine brake the car down a hilll no matter what speed. It has corner gear hold technology to ensure the car doesn't drop to a higher gear. My car has adaptive shifting from the factory. If it's economy I want, followed by a drag off the lights, followed by more economy, followed by a high-speed run on a highway then I can have it to exacting standards that I command. With an exhaust, my car didn't drone or slur when it changed gears, it barked. My car launches hard every time and the launch control knows what revs to launch at depending on snow, rain, dark, light, road surface, whatever. My car blips the throttle on downchanges every time and knows the revs to match for a downchange. My car is a manual and no amount of technology in the world will ever make anything more intuitive, personal and fun as a manual. There will always be advantages to owning an auto or a manual. Both have features that the other may lack and may be worth their weight in gold to prospective buyers. And the day they stop making manuals is the day I will never buy a new car again. Each to their own, this is not a flaming exercise about those that don't drive manual, but simply put, I will always prefer manual. There's abolutely nothing better than dancing within 100RPM of cut-out to extract every last bit of performance. Pure magic. Whilst you may find changing gears and using a clutch boring, I find doing nothing more than putting it in D for Donkey and steering the wheel around corners to be utterly lifeless in all but a select few automatics. The 6-speed auto in the current Falcons and Territories is one exception - it's absolutele magic. Long live the stickshift.

I'm sure I've done that 'track' before in Colin McRae Rally.

No, the XR5 should never be made in auto...for one, its just not right. Secondly, if there was an auto option, could you imagine how much longer the waiting list would be!!
And thirdly, guys, please take your b*tching elsewhere. Mitch - great to hear you're happy with your new car. Piotr - great to know you don't own a Polo because they're obviously not for you. Enjoy your wheels too

The only auto that would be remotely justifiable in the XR5 would be the ZF 6speed in the Falcon/Tez/etc range. Even then, fitting the thing would be an engineering feat and the price would get a little interesting.

But back on topic, I assume the Astra VXR... (whatever its called) in the UK is only available in manual form also??
Things may have been intersting from the start if Ford had released a 6speed manual + auto in the Focus...I think sales of the Golf and Mazda 3 would have taken a huge blow. But as Zetec has mentioned, theres nothing like the control of a manual, especially on the twisty bits.

I wouldnt buy an auto simply for the regular servicing which the gearbox needs, also lots more expensive to fix/repair and more prone for faults/damage.
