Default auto box/diff concerns

I've noticed for quite a while now that my car (EL falcon) doesn't seem to enjoy engaging top gear when shifting up through the gears. Only 4th is a problem. kickdown is fine just when shifting back up to 4th it is reluctant, drivetrain makes a bit of a clunk/whirr noise and the car kinda jiggies and im in 4th. It It never fails to engage 4th though.

This car has a new auto box back at 40000 and now has 130000 (ive owned to for 20000). Is a gearbox service recommended? common problem? can the fluid be changed?

Gearbox specialist wouldnt be my last port of call anyway.

Unless the diff is making noise, i doubt it will have anything to do with it. Sounds like the Auto needs a service.

You can have a look at colour and level of ATF in your automatic. It's not so easy without hoist, (there is no dipstick in EL's, only the plug (18 or 16 spanner) on the right side of automatic) but it's the first thing which I'll recommend to do...

I say service time... I work on gearbox's so I say give it a service straight up... And if hasn't had a service for 90,000k's then ****... even 20,000 is too long I surgest every 10,000 at the most...(a bit hipocritical of my self mine is 7,000 over due and is starting to do the same...) but when to you find time to work on your own car...

If this doesn't help I surgest a rebuild...

ok so how to have a proper look at the tranny fluid and check the level without it pouring on me? is there a fill and drain plug?
Im very much a novice but Id like to have a go changing the fluid myself...So if I could get some instruction, fluid type/amount from u guys that would be great!

Jack your car up on the front right I think... Or the hole front if you have enough jacks...

There should be a sump plug on drivers side(this is how you tell when it is full because the is no dipstick) get a small cup and let alittle spill into it then put the plug back in... if it is black in colour or just about you need to get a service...

If not go to a Trans place preferably one were you talk to the mechanic and not an office lady(big company's will rip you off) and explaine your simpton's...

You can change ATF by yourself if you have equipment and some experience…
You need “Ford” ATF, like 95LE from memory, about 4 or 5 litres. Also you need hand pump to put fluid inside the gearbox. And auto service kit, from Bursons for example.
On my opinion, it’s not right to change auto fluid without hoist, but if you want to do this so much- all in your hands…

Don't get under the car on a jack. At least use the spare wheel as a stand under the lifted tyre. Lay it flat with the outer face facing the tyre you're lifting, place it under the front wheel if you can get it high enough, and lower the car.

I have an EL,June '98 manufacture,it has the dipstick for the tranny,strange some do and some dont.
Also,mine works fine up and down through the gears,BUT,put it into a gear,ie--1st,2nd or 3rd,it still goes through the gears to top,doesnt hold in the gear selected,any ideas of the prob??

What colour of ATF? And is level good?

The level is good,but a dark colour to it,I feel it may just need a service,but wanted to be sure thats all it is.

If it’s very dark, better to flush automatic (approx.20 of ATF needed) and change filter as usual…
