We have the spray collar. Works wonders. As soon as he starts barking, we put it on. Then you hear him yap another 2 times, and he's quiet after that. He has learned, when the collar is on or off. But he is much better than what he used to be. You just have to be quick to put the collar on, to make him learn.

Cheers

I have a jack russell that just doesn't shutup. Tried obedience training, collars, sleeping in it's own pen/area.

When he's away he's usually quiet, but as soon as it gets to the afternoon he's none stop barking some times. I'll usually spend a large chunk of the day with him, and he gets at least one walk a day, but still barks?

Can get on the nerves quite a bit. And before anyone says it, he's not allowed inside.

And that is the main cause of your problem...dogs are pack animals they NEED to be with the pack leader ....you have a lot to learn about dogs!!!

A good start(and I'm just as bad..dogs should have their own spot/place to sleep and my little girl sleeps on the bed with me and the missus..much to the missus dislike)

Does your dog go outside with you if he does he probably just wants to play...if not then he wants to be out there with you.

The new collars spray a citronella substance that the dogs hate and they soon learn not to bark, OR you could put you dog’s bed in the laundry and let it sleep in side at nite!

I suggest you watch 'Meercat Manor' and learn about pack animals.

I did not say it should sleep in your bed...read my posts and learn!

OK to be kind..the dog does not have to have been in a pack...it is a learned condition from thousands of years ago.

It is an inherited condition...they always have and will always be pack animals...they need the reassurance and comfort and protection of the pack mentality.

You are the pack leader and as such the dog must be allowed to be part of your pack.

As has been said ..if you don't want the dog inside at least let it have an area where it can see you and feel part of the pack.

To this end there are what are known as baby gates which are adjustable for size and can keep your dog in a room but it still has sight of you.

How is anything a cause there? I spend a lot of time with him still.. I don't see how putting him away outside is any different to putting him away in a laundry?

Sorry, don't get where you're coming from. We've had plenty of dogs over the years, and this guys the only one that barks like this.

Well the black bags under my eyes this morning are from one thing.... a barking dog!! Just recently bought a staffy pup (13weeks old now) and he's a dream dog.. got the usually teething probs but apart from that he's great.

Problem is his little Jack Russell mate next door. Before we got our little man we noticed that this dog just barked 24/7... so when we got Bundy the barking obviously increased. To keep them both happy during the days when myself and partner are at work we built a gate in our adjoining fence so as they could keep eachother company. It works great, and while the neighbours dog is in our yard she's fine... but as soon as our little man is inside having a kip, just chillin with us or we put their dog back and close the gate it just goes crazy?! Any suggestions on giving the neighbours a subtle hint without causing tension?

I agree. Most dog owners seem to be either too deaf, too lazy or too stupid to do anything about their barking dogs .. and if anyone complains then there is hell to pay! My father-in-law was a shire ranger and his simple suggestion to people was just to keep the dog inside - either the house or shed - to stop the stimulus. However if you are willing to take the time/effort to fix the problem .. good on ya!

we rang a mob called dogtech ,they are coming to see us in 2 weeks, they said most dogs only take 2 visits to settle, and as the problem has not been going on for yearsit should be realatively easy to sort out.
as for the pack mentality that sounds about right ,a vet once said that the dog looks up to me as alpha male in our family pack.
I reckon its because Im bigger and stronger than him but the missus says its because Im hairier than him. :

Yeah mate. When I go outside, he comes out aswell.

He only barks when I have to go somehwere, that I can't take him.

So in other words he's like my shadow, so to speak lol. He follows me everywhere I walk, just about.

you are the pack leader , disipline the dog when it barks for a long time. i want my dogs to bark when something unusual is happening but stop when i tell them to. also go visit all your neighbours and ask them if the dog is causing a problem and let them know you are getting it sorted , people will complain less when they know your looking for a solution.

also if you are being woken by someone elses dog get their phone number and give them a call when it wakes you and ask them to quieten it down . lol

seen a bull terrier years ago with a shock collar it barked and got zapped so it yellped and got zapped. poor thing kept yelping and getting zapped. owner removed it after i offered to strangle him with it. my dogs have always been house dogs used to have a blue heeler (he died at 15years) and a 65kg rotti (he lived to 11 before cancer got him) both lived in doors all their lives. now i have a pit bull (he's nearly 10) and he's lived inside all his life. he is curled up in arm chair next to me now. the rotti was trained for security. ive never had issues with my dogs barking, probably because theyre so spoilt.

Shock collars do work well, and the better models are not as cruel as some people think. Mine has seven levels from memory, its starts off with a real small shock then it gradually gets bigger if the dog continues to bark. After several months of my dog barking at night it only took a few days to stop her. Its been over 2 years now and I've only had to use it 3 times and the 2nd and 3rd time the batteries weren't so there was no shock.
I only used this as a last chance option, we did try all other methods and didnt want any further problems with new neighbours and the council. She is now happy, well behaved and loved by the neighbours.

Had a couple of German Shepards that used to G each other up. Fitted them with the citronella collars, all was working well until both dogs were in the back of the station wagon and a car pulls up alongside yapping it's head off.

One shepard starts barking, the other one gets a rather nasty squirt of citronella, next thing they are having a major set to in the back of the car.
Look back and laugh now :
