Any ideas what would be causing my 2011 MC Mondeo TDCi to "surge", this is more easily detected under load. A part from change in engine noise another noise is evident from passenger side of engine bay (Turbo ?)
I have booked in to Ford after Easter to look at this but I am concerned I may do some major damage if I continue driving, and yes warranty expired last month. |

Maybe bad fuel, clogged DPF, clogged air filter, Maf sensor.
Have a look at all these and maybe add some Liqui Moly or similar Diesel additive or any DPF safe additive and see if that helps. Keep us posted. Maybe go for a longer drive and give it a boot full to clean her out!

I had mine surging a little while ago mostly between70 and 80 kph. I had a diesel place have a look and they cleaned the intake and it was much better

Left it with Ford who were unable to find a problem, a long drive had "cleaned" it out however fault has returned plus occasional rough idle, will look to clean MAF sensor later this week.
Will keep you posted |

Having just changed my Fuel Filter, and reading your post, I had the occasional hunting (also called surging) on first cold start idle. Well now thinking of it I haven't noticed it since the change. I'll keep an eye on it but I'd start with the easy stuff.

update I noticed today a slight surging at idle on startup today. So that rules out a filter change.

An on going saga with Ford who are unable to diagnose issue "surging", I had thought transmission/ clutch slippage in power shift gearbox, but no joy! Recent service and software upgrade appeared to fix issue, this lasted as long as the 45 minute trip home. Throw in the occasional trip with rough idle / miss.
Engine light has come on today, a quick stop at my local non ford mechanic has thrown up 2 error codes P2456 - diesel particulate filter pressure sensor 'A' circuit intermittent / erratic P2463 - diesel particulate filter restriction - soot accumulation. Now have two train of thoughts - Dpf has been the problem all along, or wrong oil has been used at service? Note last week completed 350km trip in one hit surely this would be enough to clean system |

Maybe a problem with the sensor or wiring going to it?
If not it could really be sooting up more often than it should be. Do you fuel up at the same place all the time? Dodgy diesel will cause bulk sooting. I only ever use BP Ultimate or Caltex vortex diesel as they tend to burn cleaner. Chips or ECU tunes can cause excess sooting too if you have any of them fitted.

Mik, travel 12km's to work, average speed 75kms plus, however car will sit 4-5 days a week without use
Binny, fuel is normally from one outlet, caltex premium diesel mostly used, most recent fill up BP Cheers Jason |

As per below, I am looking for a quote on replacing Dpf & dpf sensor, any suggestions for north east suburbs of Melbourne?
Ford have now reported and quoted the following P2456 - dpf differential pressure sensor circuit intermittent / erratic P2463 - dpf - soot accumulation P2452 - dpf differential pressure sensor open Regen carried out, road test showed Regen failed Suspected fault with dpf pressure sensor The expensive bit! Sensor $471 Dpf $5,106!!! |

I notice you said you use Premium diesel. A few months ago I read an article (can't now remember where can't remember when) that running premium diesel is not recommended on many (not all) modern diesels. Apparently premium diesel doesn't have the same connotation as premium petrol. Perhaps it might be an idea to check this out, say, with Ford for a start. I avoid the premium diesel and I'm not having the problems described here. Jus' sayin' is all!

Hi Pinballez,
Any luck with your car? My wife's 2011 MC has just stated surging too. I thought gearbox/clutch at first but it could certainly be DPF problems. If it is the DPF I would look at ketting it taken out and the car re-tuned. |

Replaced Dpf differential pressure sensor, approx $400, and replaced blocked Dpf, found a wreck with 20,000kms, $250 for the dpf, has fixed most issues.
Clutches appears to still have minor slip under load, symptoms are rattle from transmission and noticeable taco bounce whilst holding gear. full transmission service due soon, will keep you posted on outcome |
