Mirror rattle.

Hey anyone know how to stop the centre mirror rattling? Im guessing its a pretty common problem, nearly every AU ive been in does it.

Mine doesn't rattle, they are suctioned arn't they ? so I don't know why it should be rattling ?.

Apparently people tighten them with an allen key.
I just put my wallet on top of it. Just make sure you dont go around corners to fast, as it will fly out the window.

The spring metal clips tend to lose tension. You have to remove the mirror from the mount and prise the metal tangs out again to place more tension on the mount when you push it back on.

PS. There's no Allen head screw on an AU mirror and not everyone's wallet is as heavy as Monty's LOL.

PPS. You remove the mirror from the mount by forcing it upwards - takes a good push!

Even the factory Premium Sound in my TE50 makes mine rattle when I've got it going. Seems the mirror is nice and firm, not wiggly or anything so I assume it's something internal rattling, although it's more like a "buzz."

Pretty rare I have it up that loud though, only when a good song's on as I prefer the sound of the Windsor shouting back at me.

Mine has an allen key screw securing it to the base wich is glued to the mirror, i know cause it fell on me whilst driving. then removed the base reglued it then refitted the mirror tightened the screw and been good ever since.
From memory it was a 2mm allen key or about there.

You are correct about everything else, perhaps except about Monty's wallet! LOL!

Well he has an AUIII XR6 so I was only concerned with offering help for that car - so I didn't tell him how to fix a 77 Cortina either.

PS. Just in case anyone does want to know how to do a 77 Corty - it's the same as an AUI. But you didn't hear it from me 'cos I wouldn't post in the wrong thread LOL.

I was thinking about this today. Many insurance companies offer a free windscreen replacement every so often.

It would be easy enough to order a S1 mirror and have the windscreen dude intall this item, rather than the S2-3 item with the clips. As it happens, I actually have another S1 mirror spare, so when I get the window replaced, I'll get that one put in.

For what it's worth, I have a S1 and S2, and I've never had an issue with the S1 mirror.

I agree ... the older style metal plate on the glass with the grub screw fixture is better.

mine comes loose about every year but mine has a grub screw so just nip it up every now and then, its from bass and bumpy roads the grub screw is on the part that connects to the window you have to look underneath it

Let them know beforehand. I just had a new screen installed in AUIII at a panel shop without the mirror in the car but when I picked it up the new mount was already glued to the screen. Don't know if the screen was supplied like that or the screen guy glued it on

I just had both windscreens replaced last week and I can tell you the mounting isn't on the screen, the fitter will glue it in place before the screen is fitted. How do I know?; I had him raise both mounts up as high as was practical to raise the mirror so I could see under it better. Like the visor, the mirror is too low IMO and obstructs vision, especially if you mount a GPS in the middle of the screen. It's amazing how much better it is being just an extra 20-25mm higher.

That's correct - screen comes clean and mirror mount is fitted by the screen guy. Give him the mount you want to fit and he can glue it on for you.

The only rattle I have in my series II AU XR8 is the bloody mirror rattle!!! It was bugging the be-jesus out of me, so finally I took a long hard look at, and nutted out why it rattles and then nutted out how to stop it WITHOUT REMOVING the mirror !!!
Over years of you, or previous owners, drivers pulling on the mirror to adjust it to their viewing pleasure, the steel block mounted to the windscreen that sits in the metal clip in the base of he mirror does indeed wear and becomes loose inside the bracket allowing the mirror base to "float" in any direction above the windscreen, thus the vibration!!!
I attempted to slide the mirror "up" with great force and it didn't budge so I thought bugger this I dont want a cracked windscreen.
Then it cam to me, what if I could fill the gap that has been created through the base of the mirror just floating? So I thought what could I fill it with?
BLU TAC!!! yup indeed blu tac! It was soft, malleable and it could easily be pushed into all the vacant gaps under the base to alleviate the rattle.
So armed with a strip of blu tac and my trusty credit card, I held the mirror away from the windscreen a little creating the maximum gap so I could push blu tac into it. I used the credit card to push maximum amount in all around inside the base nice and neat with none spewing out from the sides.
Took me all of a couple of minutes, you cant see the blu tac and the rattle is but of a distant memory!!!

i have only one rattle in my s2 ..........and i put it there when i did a dash out job, later finding out i did`nt need too

Sounds like that dude who takes the dash apart on his VZ/Y SS commy on the supercheap add lol, only to discover it was a couple of screws in the ash tray
