Default Australian inventions

I found this today.

http://www.whitehat.com.au/Australia...ventionsA.html

Bloody amazing what can happen if you have an "I wonder if I can solve this" attitude rather than the "Someone else should do this for me" or "This is too hard for dumb people/too dangerous/does not fit into my social agenda" dogma that seems to abound lately.

Thanks for that link.

On my travels most do not believe or know that Aussies invented polymer notes... I think I'll need to remember some more Aussie firsts for future conversations.

Cheers,

Jason.

The Xerographic process is a big one - heart of most photocopiers and laser printers...

Also, interscan - a type of ILS (Instrument landing system) for aircraft..

The ideas are there, it just seems to be that we can't commercialise them particularly well...
except for the Wiggles maybe - they've made a mint.

Good thread Flappist

I remember Jeremy Clarkson bagged Australians as only inventing the Hills Hoist on one episode of Top Gear. This happened whilst I was in the UK and copped a ribbing about it at work the next day

If only I had access to this thread then!

How can "look what can be done if you think positive instead of negative" be perceived as "negative spin".

Australia is meant to have more inventions (per capita) then the rest of the world, unfortunately the investment is not in this country so it normally goes OS.

Do they all classify as inventions? Take for example:
Quote:
The Zeta Platform, a global drive architecture for rear wheel drive vehicles, was developed by a Melbourne engineering team led by Tony Hyde. It is expected to be used in all GM rear wheel drive vehicles produced throughout the world.
Its like saying we invented a specific design of alloy wheel. I fail to see how its an invention. But that may just be me. I don't really see 'Vegemite' as an invention either.

Well I certainly do see Vegemite as an invention, one has to be very inventive to make axle grease taste so nice.

"Shepherd's Castors - the dome shaped castors invented by George Shepherd in 1946 soon became the world standard."
I thought may have been a Kiwi one, for a 69 with sheep.

The two I don't think you can go past are, The Pacemaker, and Penicillin. While we have had plenty that have made life easier, these two have made life livable.

Main article: Discovery of penicillin
The discovery of penicillin is attributed to Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming in 1928.[3] He showed that, if Penicillium notatum was grown in the appropriate substrate, it would exude a substance with antibiotic properties, which he dubbed penicillin. This serendipitous observation began the modern era of antibiotic discovery. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley.

Pacemaker:

Quote:
In 1926, Dr Mark C Lidwell of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital of Sydney, supported by physicist Edgar H Booth of the University of Sydney, devised a portable apparatus which "plugged into a lighting point" and in which "One pole was applied to a skin pad soaked in strong salt solution" while the other pole "consisted of a needle insulated except at its point, and was plunged into the appropriate cardiac chamber". "The pacemaker rate was variable from about 80 to 120 pulses per minute, and likewise the voltage variable from 1.5 to 120 volts" In 1928, the apparatus was used to revive a stillborn infant at Crown Street Women's Hospital, Sydney whose heart continued "to beat on its own accord", "at the end of 10 minutes" of stimulation.
Both taken from Wikipedia.

As news of their funny yellow powder leaks out to the press, wartime Britain looked for a hero. Another invention is DME (Distance Measuring Equipment). This equipment is still used in aircraft today. It measures the distance from the aircraft to the runway, to put it plain and simple. GPS is seen as being more accurate these days though.

Our DME, DMEA was also FAR superior to the currend DMEI as it had much longer range but we lost the band (220Mhz) to digital TV.

GPS requires satellites that are controlled by outside forces, DME/VOR is local to the aid and aircraft.

I have had several experiences when GPS has fallen over.
Never had a letdown go wrong (well other than me stuffing it up of course)

I still reckon one of our best inventions was the Racecam technology pioneered in the late 70's by Channel 7 and now used worldwide.

Cheers
Russ

PS: I believe radar is generally credited to a Scot named Watt who was some relative of James Watt (inventor of the steam engine).
