Default Again with the AUI brakes

Got the optunity to buy a front pair of genuine TE calipers and rotors. Mainly just want the 2 spot calipers.

Or I was thinking trying to source a set of BA XR brakes, as mentioned a while back. They are also a 2 spot, but would they be as good as the T3 brakes?

Also should I worry about upgrading the back brakes or is the BA got a single spot aswell?

Any thoughts about the two systems? Also I know that I do need a few more parts to convert from the S1

Standard AUI:
- Front: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 287mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 287mm Disc

Standard AUII/III:
- Front: Twin Piston Caliper to hold a 287mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 287mm Disc

Tickford/Premium AU Setup:
- Front: Twin Piston Caliper to hold a 330mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 287mm Disc

BA (incl XR):
- Front: Twin Piston Caliper to hold a 298mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 303mm Disc

BA Premium Brakes:
- Front: Twin Piston Caliper to hold a 325mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 303mm Disc

FPV:
- Front: Twin Piston Caliper to hold a 330mm Disc
- Rear: Single Piston Caliper to hold a 303mm Disc

I think thats mostly correct. As you can see on the BA's they got a larger rear disc, but slightly smaller front disc (than the Tickford setup), unless you get a FPV setup as fitted to the FPVs.

The Tickford Setup, ran exactly the same setup as standard at the rear. But I'd swap over the calipers anyway, for the Tickford wings.

Also just to add...

To further make the conversion to the twin-piston setup, you will need:
- Aftermarket Swaybar
- 16" Wheels or Greater
- Lower Control Arms
- Uprights

(I think thats about right)

thanks for the info.. Looking at that prolly best to grab the TE50 front brakes and upgrade the back as needed.

And yeah the tickford wings are a bonus, though I want to swap the red for another color.

There is actually some debate as to whether T3 TE50 brakes were red. T3 TS50 brakes, were definately red. But yes, the wings are a bonus, and you can always upgrade the rears later. But as most of the braking is from the front, you'd want the big puppys up front.

As fate would have it. I just won an eBay auction for the BA XR setup and got:

2x front calipers 2x rear calipers,
2x front brake hoses, 2x rear brake hoses,
2 front rotors 2x rear rotors and the brake pads

I had the maximum set and if I didn't win I was going to bid on this front set up:

Isn't there a stack more stuff required to convert an au1 to au2 brakes. Brake booster and all that related stuff im sure it would be even harder with abs. If you went through with all that you might as well just be the pbr upgrade kit way better then the stock brakes.

Mr Cube let us know how you go with the change over, I also have a set of Tickford brakes to put on my AU1 with all the control arms and everthing else but have been to lazy to do anything about putting them in. They have been sitting in my garage for the last 6months collecting dust, so I should just get off my Butt and put them in

stretch - brake lines aside (i have never removed them), the rest of the setup shouldn't take more thna one hour per side.

Cubie - Are you sure BA brakes will fit an AU1?

JC - Yeah Im pretty sure, I remember thinking about going that way when I first looked at upgrading the brakes. If it all ends in a heap I will just put em back on eBay, there was a fair bit of interest in them.

If it all works out, and I still have the XR, I may even make you an offer for your rear slotteds (assuming you are going to fit the BA ones to the back as well). You will have to keep us all informed, as this could be a really good conversion - especially to GT or GT-P sized brakes.

hey guys,
I spoke to repco and a few other sources about getting a PBR brake upgrade.. i can pick it up for $2,360 although i have a series 1 AU, and i know what i need to upgrade but where can i get a aftermarket swaybar to fit? what brand is it etc etc

I think you'll find they wont fit AU1, as they had different spindels, everything will fit though, you'll have to get a pair of AU2 spindels......
Dont know why you need an other sway bar, or lower control arms??

Different sway bar, because the factory one will knock something.

Lower control arms so that the mounting points can line up (with the twin-pot caliper) or something like that.

A whiteline swaybar should do, but i believe you will need the swaybar mounting points off an AU2/3. So that you can get a AU2/3 Spec swaybar.

Best call up Cebco, and speak to a mechanic/designer, and find out from them, about what you need to modify to fit their Cebco kits and other aftermarket brake packages, such as PBR, or to fit a AUII/III type setup.

The calliper is bolted on to the spindle not the lower control arm... :voldar02: ...???

Seems to be a lot of gesswork going on here :evil_laug

I don't know exactly, as i haven't done it. I have spoken quickly to EvilChief, and read some of his posts, and he's done the whole lot. AU1 -> AU2/3 spec.

The sway bars on the AU1s mount the same way they do on EA-ELs - ie they have a link at the front of the lower A arm. The AU2s mount in a different position, and the sway bar itself is a totally different shape. I have one of each (AU1 & 2), and have done a lot of suspension work on both. To remove the shock spring assembly on an AU1, you need to remove the sway bar links (or at least loosen one of the linkage points), but you don't need to when doing an AU2/3.

So, a new sway bar is definitely required when changing to an AU2/3 upright and lower A-arm/control arm.
