BBC April Fools Prank - 1957

I saw this on TV the other day, so i thought it worthy.

First broadcast on BBC Panorama on 1st April 1957, a very young Richard Dimbleby revealed the wonderful world of Swiss spaghetti production to millions of deprived and hungry post-war Brits.
The reaction from the public was... Too funny.

One of my fave "public pranks" (tho not April 1) was during the olympic torch relay for melbourne olympics (56?)


The torch was coming into sydney at jsut on dusk, and the runner had to run up town hall steps and hand it to sydney lord mayor. I have heard ABC radio footage of the event. The Lord mayor accepts teh torch the crowd goes wild, he launches into his speech "this is great day... blah blah"

Suddenly he is tapped on the shoulder "sir, you must stop. the REAL torch is just on its way now.."

Apparently some jokers from Sydney Uni had bodged up a "torch" from a chair leg, jam tin and a burning rag doused in Kero. One of them just ran into the crowd and was swept up to the mayor. After he had handed it over, all attention was on the officials and the runner was forgotten, so he just "jumped a rattler home" (caught the tram)

No harm done, red faces on all the pumped up politicians and VIPs of the day. true aussie larrikanism at its best! BRILLIANT! Top that one Chasers!

That was on 20 to 1 "Pranks and Pranksters" I think it was called. It was funny but I don't think anything will ever top The Chasers did!
