03:00-04:00 is the time the backup and daily maintenance jobs run and to get it done quickly, most of the server side resources are allocated to the task.

The 16-odd thousand “guests” active right now, must be a running challenge for the server.

I looked the other day at an odd hour, guests in the high tens of thousands, and as you would expect just a handful of members.

Have been experiencing intermittent timeouts again since last night or so - is there another onslaught in the background?

Over 88,500 visitors at 8:50 PM Saturday night.
Is the server under attack?
I have sent a PM to Russ.

Is the server being targeted?
I think you mean tonight, Friday night? 88,900 visitors right now. Very slow loading pages.

The answer is, of course, yes. I blocked one group of rogue MSN bots last night and another range of IP addresses from Hong Kong this morning. We are still showing 44k guests so I will check that there isn't another range but the blocks only stop new ones from connecting and the already connected ones can't do anything and gradually drop off.

Russ to the rescue again, Thank you.

BTW is there anyone else on the Admin Team that could be CC when site tech issues occur please?

Still showing 71k "guests". Might a reboot be in order to punt these cockroaches?

Funnily, they aren't doing any harm from a server load perspective as they are all blocked form doing anything and the STOP message is cached so not adding anything to the server load which has been sitting at a steady 3.5-4.5. Higher than normal but not high enough to have any performance impact.

In terms of who to cc we really don't have a secondary tech resource although there are a couple of very knowledgeable people (cs123 and data_mine) who I call on when I get stuck.
