Whining noise from engine

I have a 2008 Tdci MA. Never had any issues with the car. But, over the last 2-3 weeks i noticed a whining noise coming from the engine - hard to place exactly where from. It appears to be intermittent and makes no difference if its cold or hot. No difference if AC is on/off or radio on/off (or if wife is in car). Doesnt whine when idling only when accelarating and also when its cruising. On a couple of ocasions when i shut the engine down you could hear it "whine down" like a turbo.

Took it to my mechanic and was doing it all the way there, and soon as he sat in the car and we took it for a drive not a peep out of it. When i left the workshop about 10 minutes later it started again.

Anybody have any similar experiences and suggestions as to what could be causing it??

I have the same car and no not experienced you problem,this is one disadvantage of taking your car to your local mechanic no matter how good he is taking it to where you bought from they may have service bulletins regarding this problem if they tell you whats wrong you can always go back to your mechanic

Car Whine - loose belts that stretch under hard load (fast accelerate) and slip/whine ?
Wife Whine - sorry, no suggestions...but would another one (wife) cancel out the first ? Like counter harmonics ?

One from left field...

Focii have a similar "turbo wind down" sound from the electro-hydraulic steering when the ignition is switched off (or so I'm told that's what it is - happens in petrol as well as turbo diesel models anyway, so it definitely isn't turbo related at all). Might it be something related to the steering?

Not that left field In Focus, some early model Mk 4s (MA) had dodgy power steering pumps. I would definitely get it to a Ford dealer if it's still under warranty.

Thanks guys. Mentioned this to my boss and he called his son who is a mechanic at Ford and he said that its more than likely the auto transmission reservoir developed a fault and is sucking in air. I booked the car in and they replaced the reservoir and filter (under warranty) - the filter was totally clogged and the reservoir was faulty, now replaced with a better quality one.

Happy to say the noise is now gone and problem solved.

Hi Guys,

Loving the forum and the information I've found on here. I'm loving my Mondeo but am a bit worried about it at the moment (Sorry, strong attachment to the car!).

Long story short, I too have started to experience a whining noise as described by the OP.

The only difference is, i have a 2.3L Petrol and it's just come out of warranty...

Whats the possibility of the fix being the same as the OPs considering the difference in engine?

I'm thinking this way because I (naively) assume the same 6spd transmission is used?

If the fix would be the same, anyone feel like speculating the cost involved?

Post mining but I have just driven a 2.3L Petrol MB and I hear a whining noise accelerating and decelerating.
Any advice as I am looking to buy the car

And is the timing chain due to be changed at 165,000 ks?
