From my young and virile days, I must admit to consuming the occasional floater from the iconic Adelaide Pie Cart on North Terrace which was normally on a Friday or Saturday night waaaaaay past midnight after ingesting copious quantities of questionable beverages.

My favourite choice was a chicken pie floater with sauce and vinegar. The tricky part when eating was trying not to step in one of the ejected floaters sprawled across the footpath which in winter, were still hot and steamy. The tricky part after eating was not to eject the floater.

Had my first one at that bakery at O'Connell street in North Adelaide.

It needs more vinegar to suit wog tastes but it's not bad - wog pie floater, 75% more vinegar and use broadbeans with balsamic vinegar and olive oil

Likewise, but I thought it was in Victoria Square?

You'll probably have to go to the supermarket and buy a tin of mushy peas then take a pie home from a bakery and construct it yourself.

Victorians really are doing it tough when it comes to the pie floater.

Emerald Village Bakery & Cafe (Vic). Just about everything they make is really good, though their chocolate brownies aren’t as good as the ones my wife makes.

Now this is a case of the double negative. Where 2 negatives equal a positive. Theres a bakery in chatswood i frequent that do the best ham and cheese croissants. On paper they are a crappy croissant, crappy ham and the cheese is kraft singles. But slapped together and microwaved. Theyre brilliant.

Problem with so many croissant these days is they are bready tasting and not flaky pastries.
Bad habit I discovered is buying a sausage roll and placing it inside a fresh crispy croissant.

Chiltern bakery this morn, nice flaky sausage rolls, still not convinced about the pies, apple turnovers are great.

I can relate.

One of my favourites is making a sausage roll sandwich with cheese and sauce. The sausage roll must be good quality with meat that's firm, not like the consistency of saw dust, bread must be fresh/squishy and coated with lots of butter.

Everybody knows the humble cheese and bacon roll. The bready thing with bacon bits and cheese on top. Way back when, when my brother was working in roKWiz's selected bakery in carlingford, he was allowed on occasion to bake his own to bring home. Its probably a thing somewhere, but im yet to see it anywhere. Basic concept. The cheese and bacon loaf. So a loaf of white bread infused with cheese and bacon bits. So, not on top, but in the bread. Best when it was still warm from the oven, but even next day or whatever, a slice of that chucked in the microwave for a few seconds was still pretty good.

Default Re: The bakery thread - Coromandel Bake Bakery

Todays review:
This place is a stand out favourite of mine and many others - the most obvious measure that this is a great bakery is that its always really busy. We had to wait in line starting from outside the shop and once inside, it was very clear that the customers cared more about their hunger than social distancing. Staff were very friendly and efficient but totally run off their feet.

When we eventually reached the counter, I ordered a chunky pepper steak and sweet potato pie plus a large sausage roll (Available in 2 sizes). Both of these exceeded my expectations in flavour and size. In fact, I ate the sausage roll before even thinking about taking a photo. Also ordered by other members of our group were butter chicken pie, chunky steak and mushroom pie and two more sausage rolls, all of which were greatly received and disappeared leaving only a few crumbs.

Dessert consisted of two vanilla slices, a chocolate custard donut and a standard chocolate donut plus a huge cookie for take away. I had one of the vanilla slices which were so deep that to take a proper bite, it would have been necessary to dislocate ones jaw so it was a case of just nibble and hope for the best. The flavour was as amazing as the quantity of perfect custard which was sandwiched between two flakey pastry layers cooked to perfection and coated with chocolate sprinkled fondant icing. other cakes did not disappoint the group.

On the way out, I purchased a 2Kg, 16 Inch long pasty slice and 4 chunky steak pies to put in the freezer for ron.

Overall rating: 9/10

They need to franchise that shop out but keep the original store as is.

Oh, and on Monday I'm going to deed poll and changing my name to Ron.

Another day, another bakery, this time Mawson's in Euroa.
Had 2 chunky steak pies this morning I like how they have a hint of tomato relish already baked inside, so there is no reason to add horrible tomato sauce.

And this one is for Franco if he's tuned in. They do Kiev's.

Bought this crispy fried chicken Kiev to re-heat up for dinner just now. Nice just with a side salad.

Perfect post!
Looks awesome, I can never stop at one chunky steak pie, if it's a memorable one.

The way those pies have risen, it’s majestic. You could just stare at them coming out the oven as visual gluttony.

+1 for Clarendon and Pt Elliott Bakery, fantastic food.
I have tried all of the others but might have gone on the wrong day as I can't recall anything that really stands out.

It's more about the quality of the baked goods than anything. i.e. not soggy or overly oily.

Clarendon do the best black forest cherry donut

It’s becoming clear that Australia’s best chance for post-CV economic recovery is powered by bakery goods. This is obviously where the focus of TAFE reform needs to aim, with new levels of proficiency in sausagerollery and piemanship.

In the meantime there’s potential for a vertically integrated health program; accredited face masks that smell just like your favourite pie, pasty, custard tart etc. I think consumer uptake will be very enthusiastic!

During the Covid 19 lock down in SA, I made some dessert bowl, man sized meat pies and sent one to a self confessed pie connoisseur who was in need of a moral boost.

This was their review.

I was first met by the sheer size of this behemoth of a pie. The elegant way the pastry decor adorned the top, the expert way the foil was folded to carefully carry it's precious contents, instantly indicated that this was no ordinary meal.

The glorious smell that wafted up through the cracks in the top, carressed my senses as a wave of nostalgia hit me hard. I closed my eyes and I was a young child, standing in my Nana's kitchen whilst she baked and cooked around me. I knew this was a moment to be savoured.

As I carefully removed the prize from its metal cocoon, I amazed at how the structure remained in tact, standing strong like a Castle's keep.
As I plated up this truly special creation, I was able to see it in all its glory.

And it was beautiful.

Scared to destroy its beauty, hunger overcame me and I carefully pierced it's golden exterior with my firm utensil. It put up some resistance as my fork sank further into its flesh. My knife, not wanting to miss out, swiftly joined it's brethren in the slaying of this beefy beast.

The guilt of butchering such a treasure was short lived as the full fragrance held within invaded my nostrils. I could no longer hold back, I savagely tore a chunk and escorted it into my waiting mouth.

As soon as it touched the waiting taste buds, a wave of pure bliss took hold. The nostalgia experienced earlier, quickly shifted into a forgotten memory. This moment truly conquered any past pie experience. I never knew I could taste pure heaven in such a way.

My teeth were not required at this party, for the beef was just that tender. The combination of carrot and beef, whilst a classic, truly was a marriage from the Gods. I could taste the care and dedication with each bite as I found myself gourging on this gargantuan masterpiece.

As they say, all good things must come to end and I was left with the bland display of the plate beneath.

I felt as though I was walking on air, wishing I could re-experience the majesty of what just occurred. I knew that I was surely blessed for having been given the opportunity to sample a delight from above. I returned back to working from home duties with a new outlook, ready to finish up the day in enlightened way.

Fin.

Shearer’s Cook bakery at Woolooware/Jenola - excellent pies and sausage rolls
Vickers bakery at Jannali - old school cakes, apple turnovers with cream, Chelsea buns, laminations, vanilla slices (passion fruit icing) etc
Robertson Pie Shop - good pies (not outstanding), excellent location
Ross bakery, Ross Tas. - great vanilla slice (but not the best in the world that they claim).hard pastry on top means custard exits sideways when you take a bite.

Exiting custard definitely affects the overall score
