Why would they do this.
BMW just won World Engine of the Year, with the 3.0l i6 twin turbo.

If it works for BMW why would ford look the other way.

Like some one else has said, its time to stock up before the change.

The Duratech 3.5 has guttless torque. Kill it with fire!

GoAuto is way off the mark. Huntsman model to be released in 2010 will still be using the I6 engine and for some years after that.

Huntsman may not be Falcon though...then again I can't think of any other car that would use the I6 :

The I6 will not disappear. They've spent too much time refining the I6 and it doesn't make financial sense to then change the factory even more to get an engine that by member's statements, is no guarantee to be any better, except that it may be perceived superior by the great unwashed, which explains Camry sales.

Seems Tom Gorman has had an effect on someone... he steadfastly refuses to call the Aurion anything other than the "V6 Camry"...which is all it deserves.

You've also hit the nail on the head with why V6 is now "the thing"- perceived superior by the great unwashed. That'd be like 90%+ of people in the market for one of these cars.

A big reason why V6's are so popular is probably because they will fit under the bonnet along with a gearbox and diff.

noooooooooo, well if they do that i buying a bmw i think they still use I6, ford have been doing great things with this Engine why would they drop it, huge bottom end torque, more torque then you know what to do with, i just couldnt picture a falcon with a V6 in it would fell all round and i hate high pitch engine noise i like my I6 grunt, and the especailly the note with a nice exhaust. if they do they better not could it a faclon might as well call it....... a commonwhore. damn cant believe i just said that

Any change is a good as long as it is an improvement.

Shame but it's a sign of the times, they want to meet emissions, and that will be at the cost of power if the development is poor.

Im sure alot of people would be up in anger if we still had windsor powered and SOHC BF's gettin round. I just hope they get it right and come up with a pearler.

Jeez alot of you guys are nuts, we dont know for sure that this is going to happen, and even if it does FoMoCo US and GM have realized rear wheel drive platforms are a valuable asset and are getting their Oz arms into the act. If a V6 means we keep the Falcon instead of losing it, so be it.

Hope not. The 4.0 in NA form is about to go under 10 litres per 100km and break the 400nm and has much much better sound to boot and the scary part is I think theres even more they can do with it..

Come to think of it a quad cam 250kw V6 could be acceptable.

Me thinks it may be a little posturing to the federal government on the part of Ford. The feds know that the aussie auto industry is essential to a strong economy, and as such Ford warning of job losses will mean lost votes and taxes to the government. Ford now talks about euro 4 and development bucks and the feds will take notice.

I can't see them dropping their biggest drawcard in favour of some poncy little 339Nm V6 from Ohio. (Technically, Cleveland is in Ohio).
I predict the I6 will stay, I also predict others such as Ford USA using turbo versions of the I6 in the new orion based crown vic, and lincoln town car etc. Bear in mind, the I6 is also torsionally much stronger than any V6, and is able to have a long stroke for the purpose of tremendous torque; why give that up? Also, the I6 is virtually on par now with the best V6's in the world for fuel economy, direct injection and other improvements will see it leading the class on economy and emissions. Say NO to the I6 demise now at http://www.no_queer_as_folk_engines.com.au

If the Falcon is changed to a FWD V6, you'll find people will be keeping their I6 RWDs forever...not only as a momento of when times were good, but also as a defiant protest to the sad trends in motoring.

But we really know nothing....so let's wait and see. For now, let's enjoy it.

V6's are not bad at all your right.. I drove a Straight 6 for 13 years then went to the VP and was pretty happy with it.. The 195 V6 is a good engine but i hate to say it the Aurion does have a very nice V6 note up high in the revs, When it does get moving when it finds torque that is. But past that very good motor.
V6's are pretty snappy with low down go on demand so your never waiting to build up they rev up pretty fast.
My brother owns a BA Fairmont and even he thinks it's inevitable one day for a Falcon to have a V6, He actually welcomes it.

But if Falcon does come FWD even i'll never buy another Aussie car again!.

This is not holden or Toyota. Inline 6 has always been ford, regardless of whether it has a nice note or not, its not ford. If you want a nice note, buy a V8.

Hell no, inline 6 is the defining falcon characteristic and the thing that has always made it the better 6. If they go V6 (yuck, I would never own a V6) you may as well buy a Holden...ghey.

Globalisation and rationalisation in a company that is bleeding cash and restructuring to survive means this is inevitable, particular if future Falcons become a global platform, which is what we want, can't have it both ways. An I6 that struggles to meet Euro IV, and future emissions requirements is useless. The only way it'll survive with an I6 is if Ford invests in a global I6 engine.

(PS. Yep, head is Mexican, crank is UK cast, Aus machined I believe.)

No inline 6 = no Falcon IMHO.

If this eventuates I hope they at least have the decency to drop the Falcon name also.

This is sadly probably inevitable at some future time, maybe in a few years as the article states, and will be the loss of differentiation between the Falcon and the rest. A sad day to be sure :(

At least we have a few good years left and besides owning a new Ford and having to deal with the stealers and warranty is the worst part of Ford ownership. I reckon we just need to get the best and last of the inlines and keep em going forever :

I wouldnt think Ford would be able to afford to go to the V6.. Think of all the customers they would lose... They would be shooting themselves in the foot
