Default Which muffler?

My rear muffler is corroded and I was wondering what I should replace it with?

Do better quality mufflers provide better fuel economy?

I'm rather fuel economy than performance so which muffler should I look into?

Also I don't wanna spend a lot, I think the stock one is $70, i'd like to spend no more than $130 on it.

Also I don't care about sound.

Economy is all I'm concerned about, A bit more power could be nice but as long as it doesnt effect economy.

The tail pipe doen't do much for either performance or effieciancy.
Not sure why all commodore owners remove them?

Yet a big (not rice) one and that will be fine

get a set of pacemaker extractors and 2.5 inch catback then you'll pick up 10% more power and use the same amount of fuel or abit more if u sink the boot in

it'll also make it worth more to sell too cause everyone loves a good exhaust system its the first thing i look for when buying a new 2nd hand car

Hmmm.

I might upgrade the exhaust. Is it easy to DIY?

I don't have much cash so i might get a second hand system off ebay.

Dont get a stock system. A 2.5' redback should cost no more than $300 installed.

I dont understand why you would go new stock, surely its not that much cheaper.

Dont get 2nd had either, just save for another week.

Really the rear muffler is to stop the car from droning at certain speeds. Wouldnt be much performance gain with it on or off, but there is a difference in sound. With a straight through pipe it makes the car a fair bit louder, but unless you have extractors, cats or a good middle muffler..... it usually sounds very farty. Either get something like a lukey magnaflow middle muffler with no reso, which should sound the goods (not being farty). Or best bet just to get a small rear muffler to stop droning, but keep the sound up. Theres heaps of choices, just depends what you want. The bigger the muffler, the quieter the car tends to be.

Yeah if it's $300 for a system that's ok.

Will the corroded muffler be the reason my car was using tonnes of fuel???

If not I'll just leave it on until I can afford a decent kit.

I hear the pacemaker setups are the best.

How much would one of those cost? Also will the car use more fuel?

if you just buy a 2.5 inch lukey or redback or even no brabd one off ebay you will be right. It will cost around 300 - 350 and you can fit it yourself easy

hmmm I heard bigger exhuasts are more economical so it sounds like a good idea.

How much of a power gain in kilowatts will I be looking at?

What tools do I need to fit it myself?

Just a jack and chasis stands and a torque wrench?

if its using tons of fuel its usually either:

shot oxy sensor
map sensor plug has come undone
thermo sender is gone
or thermostat thingy is gone

do a search on them to figure out how to check/replace them

and sink the boot in means floor it lol

Hmmm do you mean the whole system?

Muffler, cat and extractors?

Or just a redback muffler for $300?

The extractors alone look around $300. Where'd you get that quote?

Also how much would a pacemaker kit cost fitted?

thats the last thing i look for, and most people i know too. modifying a car usually brings the value down no up, because you think to yourself, is the previous owner a hoon? how hard has this car been driven? id rather buy a standard car, and modify myself... after all thats what modifying is about, to individualise the car, or am i wrong.
Saying all that, i just bought an ED with big exhaust :p (lol, i totally contradicted myself) but i trusted the buyer, and checked out all the mechanicals, it was better mechanically then 4 or 5 non modified cars i tried out.
ps. the modifications didnt make the car worth more, listed price was $2000 for the ED, and i was the first to inspect it after it was in the paper for 3 days. i paid $1800.

hey dude

if you want to save some money i have a set of extractors and a 2 1/2
inch exhurst for ya for $500
they came of my ed 4L
it comes with a bolt on tail pipe. i had the flange made up on the tail so i could take the tail off with ease

1 tail pipe has a muffler on it and one is straight though both come with the exhurst

the only reason i am selling them is because i just got my falcon turbo charged and am putting on a 3 inch

Full aftermarket upgrade to extractors, cat and sports exhaust system (which includes at least, and usually 2, mufflers) is up around the $1000 to $1200 mark, depending on brands.

The condition of your exhaust has little to do with fuel econmoy (unless that cat's stuffed/blocked/melted), but lots to do with possibly accidently gassing yourself from a leaky exhaust.

hmmm.

So that $350 redback system that polyal mentioned would've just been the muffler?

you mean full CUSTOM.

i got a catback lukey 2.5" mandrel for $120 at repco (trade price), fitted it myself. Then jmm race series for $500 fitted with a new cat.

a 2.5" catback will make no difference to power. if you're not going to get extractors, save your money.

What does that 2.5 inch catback include?

Everything except extractors?

Does catback means it include everything from the catalyic converter to the exhaust pipe at the back of the car?
