House was broken into!!!

Just need to vent people and also ask for help!

my first home was broken into today in Perth NOR, only owned the place for just over 6 months i am currently working away and my mrs lives in the house by herself but works during the day. We've been wanting to alarm the place but with our wedding coming up this year money hasn't really been there to spend it on alarms, now i suppose we have no choice.

They took a few valuables, we have nothing in the house worth ALOT which we are lucky for but they did take alot of sentimental jewellery, and a couple of my chains and necklaces are quite expensive and have heavy sentimental value which sucks. They must have been looking for cash as they tipped absolutely everything upside down, papers/boxes etc are everywhere.

Now i am worried the house is a target, does anyone have any security friends that are looking for work in Perth??? I want to alarm the place asap but can't ring around till tomorrow morning. Any advice/suggestions?

Go grab a siren box, strobe & some stickers. Cheap and 97% as effective.

North of the river seems to be bad for crime.

My sis and her husband moved to Mirrabooka and were broken into within weeks. Similar to you they didnt have major stuff taken but a few things and enough to make them feel uneasy.

Bloody people need to get lives and go work for a living.

Cops said to check out hock shops for our stolen jewellery because if we find any they have to give it back to us, here's to hoping i find something!

Seriously though, good idea even if it is only to alert them to the fact they should tighten security at home.

The issue you have now is that whoever broke in knows what is left in your place and that you will likely replace the lost items. Domestic alarms, whilst handy for limiting the time someone will spend in your place are useless at stopping anyone breaking in.

There is a well known trait in people entering properties that relates to how committed they are to entry and fulfilling their intention. If that person recognises a heightened level of risk before entering, or is detected before actually entering, the likliehood is that they won't enter.

If they are deterred after breaking or entering they have a different level of commitment in place and are more likely to proceed.

For what most people buy, a siren box (front and rear) & stickers is the only indicator from the outside that the place may be alarmed.

My sister lives in Morley...on MORLEY DRIVE!! been broken into 7 times over the past 4 years. It does not matter what they do. House alarm, dog, stickers...etc...If people want what you have, they will do what they can to get it.

Sorry you got broken into. I can not imagine how bad that feels!

Bah!! Nails through 7 ply just under ground where they can just over fence etc..
Funny finding runners stuck to board !!
Seems to stop people entering where they are not welcome..
Bars on some windows, I prefer internal so cannot be seen from outside..
A good hidden safe so NO valuables are there or seen..
Have no trees out the front or side so these dead shiites can't hide behind..
Check e bay for camera security ?? They are very cheap. Can be connected to cheap p/c etc..
Never make it obvious that there's no one home.. Leave washing on line esp big blue mans shirt etc.. Leave radio, lights on at night when you go out.. Leave a car on driveway if you can etc..

Sorry to hear you got broken into, I've had cars broken into twice before, it's not a nice feeling thinking someone has gone through your stuff.

Strangely enough RAC or SGIO just released the most burgled suburbs in WA today, a lot of places are of no suprise lol

Sorry to hear, I've been done a few times in the past , even had sentimental stuff like my bravery medals stolen too !, sure is a feeling. Sad part is that it is proven that rouglhy 2/3rds of break-ins are done by people you know / people who know what valuables you have. I hope you had insurance. Cheers

The best way I've discovered to prevent break ins, is have a 6 foot tin fence round your house. Instead of putting capping on the top, make "fish hook" cuts along the top. Perfectly legal and very effective. Have a metal gate with pad lock as the entrance and make sure there is a door bell button, so people can notify you they are at the gate. (Covers the access rule for the front door)

Final piece of the puzzle is a nice friendly dog that will greet unwelcome guests if they make it over the fence in one piece. And have the signage warning of that friendly dog too.

Sorry to hear about the break in as well. Not a very pleasent feeling and I do hope you catch the culprit and give him a nice friendly welcome. (Nudge Nudge)

If you do do an alarm go the monitored alarm.

You get a phone call the moment it goes off and then you can deal with them yourself if you wish

Its what I have.

Seems to have scared off the local ferals who got to know about it quickly

I really like the bit where you alarm certain parts while you sleep.

You can have it scream or just beep quietly beside your bed so you can get up and deal with them yourself if you wish.

I was just wondering if anybody has been broken into while actually still home. Now that would be damn frightening, especially if it was very late into the night and you got woken up by the thieves.

We've been broken into and on other occasions had our front yard vandalised many times, but all of the times its been when the house was empty. I've always had the feeling that I wish I was there so I could have done something, even though it would be dangerous.

ive been installing alarms for years, as GTP said an alarm is only a deterent maybe a fake siren box front and rear of the house can deter some theives but not the desperate druggies. BUT the alarm will dial out to your mobile and then you can call the cousin or mum and dad or a relo who lives close by.
I find the response time for police or guards via a monitoring company is too slow.

I found the best way to look after my property is, a good alarm with GSM backup (incase they cut the phone line)... dialing to yours and a few other phone numbers, with a voice recorded message in the dialler (so the guy at the end of the phone knows which house has alarmed).
keep your neighbours phone numbers in your phone.
Maybe a few cameras and dummies around the house,
Loud internal sirens...if they are already inside they will want to get out fast.

try to stop theives before they enter the house maybe a beam across the property rear and sides of the house, these are quite cheap aswell, dick smith, radio parts, jaycar, altronics, should all have them, similar to the shop ones but longer in range.

we got broken into a few years ago (well mum and Dad) while we WERE ALL HOME AND AWAKE!

found the bloke that did it later but without us knowing he had been 'befriending' our shepard while we were at school and my parents were at work.

we were all in the movie room (doors closed and surround sound) while he was just pottering around our house....EVERY ROOM WAS GONE THROUGH - Dads coin collection gone, mums jewlery my awards from sport, 3 laptops and what still sickens me...my littles sisters fav teddy!

Needless to say a few things changed that night and the next day (somethings including bcr2734's post except there was photos of Dad holding them with a sign under it) - never got touched again or have been since

What p1sses me off is that some of these low lifes will retarget a house after a month or two once insurance has settled claims. If you're unfortunate enough to have been robbed you need to ack quickly and effectively to prevent these scum having another go.

Didn't sound good on the radio either this morning that youth unemployment will likely rise significantly

Heard of a bloke in a unit on the side of castle hill doing the nail and board trick he was on the first floor and park dwellars would run down the side of the hill and jump onto his balcony . He had been broken into a few times ,worked out what was happening broke bottles and put boards with nails into them under his balcony and then unscrewed his railing . The next person who tried to break in grabbed hold of the railing falling straight onto the boards and broken glass and then went to hospital .

U can set up a fairly cheap effective surveillance system with just a webcam and a Pentium 4 PC. Im currently looking at options and will post up at some stage.

I hate to play the PC line, but remember the poor dears can sue home owners for 'personal injury'.

In my lifetime (16 years) houses we've been broken into 3 times in separate houses, and only one of them was in a bad area. Lost a lot of valuables and unreplaceable things one of those times too

We were broken into about 2 years ago. The night before we were showing a movie to some friends in our lounge room on a 6ft screen in front of a projector. Two mornings later we wake up just like any other morning and walk into our open lounge, dinning and kitchen to see all the lights on, and the back screen door choked open with a potplant.

Bugger obviously knew what he was after, the projector was gone, fold down screen and leads. Also picked up a few opportune items like wrapped Bday presents (my Mums).

Theonly good thing about the whole situation was that the stuff he stole was 6 years old and almost dead. Insurance paid for the replacement of brand new projector and screen. $7000 worth. He got somethign that someone might buy on eBay for 99c and we got new stuff.

Does make sleeping pretty bloody hard though! 2 odd years on and I still wake up 4 out of 5 nights wondering if I heard something, AND WE MOVED!!!!

I was broken into when I was asleep. They went through the apartment and stole my wallet, PSP with games, dive watch/computer and my brand new $270 sunnies that I bought that evening!!!

I now sleep with a 6-D cell Maglite, phone and 6 inch knife under the mattress.
