Default Please help me decide what to do. Au Engine.

6cyl 4.0 INTEC

So Im not going to go into details on how the engine is dead but i killed the engine in my AU..

I picked up another au engine which I'm told was running when pulled out of the car at 160,000ks. But I never saw this for myself I'm just going off the word of the guy that I've never met.

I want to know is worth stripping it apart and rebuilding it with all new gaskets and new piston rings or would i be wasting my time and money?
Or should i just take the rocker cover off and inspect it and just dump it in?

Basically my question is more of a what would you do in this situation..

Thanks heaps much appreciated.

Crank it over and do a compression test and if the numbers are even across all cylinders and over 170-180psi I'd just stick it in the car after doing the crank seals and timing cover gasket.

I agree with Bushbasher - if this new motor checks out Ok with compression, install the new seals and put it in so at least you can have your car back on the road for work etc.

Depending on your future plans for the car, (and as you don't really explain what damage you have done to your original one) you now have the original motor that you can rebuild at a later stage and re-install.

I'm actually facing the same decision soon - my EF has 456,000 on it and I'm thinking either EF rebuild or AU / BA conversion.

Bushbasher's suggestion is on the money, before doing a compression check you can pull out the spark plugs & inspect their condition looking for even burning on all 6 plugs, any that are white & melted or black & sludged up can indicate some internal issues. With 160klms on the motor i dont expect any problems though, its barely run in lol!

cheers, Maka

Also, whilst it's out do the welch plugs as they are a known problem and rust from inside out. They are far easier to do with the engine out.

haha yeah unfortunately I got back to read this too late and ive got the new engine on a stand with the head off and the rest ready to be pulled apart although would it be worth stopping now just cleaning it up as it and putting the new headgasket ect on it...? haha.. I kinda got lucky with borrowing my mechanics lexus for abit and then i picked up a cheap xg ute to run around in now.. so i'l be doing a full rebuild... might even paint it up in the process. haha..
Here are 2 pictures with the head off..

Keep us all updated with the progress. How much is a rebuild on a engine like this worth?

Come on MAKA (#4), don't tell me you're going to pull the spark plugs before you do the compression check!
