Default double din's in the Aye You

Hey guys.

I've been thinking of putting a Double-din player into the AU to replace the dodgy stock one in there. I was wondering if anyone knows how well they'll fit, considering the panel curves. also, when the face angles out from the base, will there be enough room so i don't slam the gear knob through the screen.

screens i'm looking at;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/6-5-TFT-LCD-...1QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-Inch-In-Da...1QQcmdZViewItem

sorry or the noob question, not sre if i worded it well enough.

Nick

I recently fitted a double din 6 stack in dash dvd player with 7" touch screen monitor to my LTD fitted in fine, looked a bit out of place till I made up a frame to go around it and painted it to match the wood grain in the car, I think even with the dash contours it looks pretty good, will take a couple of pics tomorrow and post for you if you are interested

Oh and the panel doesn't angle out that far so there's no real danger of putting your knob through it

As promised I have included a couple of pics of the double din setup in my LTD, the frame was knocked up from a couple of pieces of 25mm MDF scavenged from the table saw bin at work and sanded to shape before being painted with wood grain and laquered, I was pretty happy with the result and even my mate the stereo installer who warned me it was going to be an ugly installation conceded that it looks much better than he thought it would.

It's a tight fit, the recess tapers in slightly and once it's pressed into place it takes a fair bit of effort to get it out again the hole is a weird shape starts off straight but dog legs in a the bottom, to make it I traced the shape of the old stereo and cut that shape from 2 pieces of 25mm MDF laminated together, I then cut the hole in the middle to the dimmensions of the outside of the new HU took a bit of work to sand it and shape it to fit but worked out fine

how the hell did you get it to look so damn neat!!! it looks like factory woodgrain paneling. painted with wood grain? is that a hard process or was it just a laminate that you bought to cover it? it looks awesome and i think i might try this at home in the car of course:P

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, I am somewhat gobsmacked at the reception this stuff has received
AU2SW: the process isn't that difficult, but having said that I have been using an airbrush for some 25 years so it comes pretty natural. there are 14 colours of paints and dyes used in the process, over a base coat which is matched to the basic wood tone of the existing trim, some is airbrushed, some is applied by brush then the whole thing gets 2 coats of polyurethane 2K clear, baked, sanded with 1200 grit and coated again in 2K clear and baked again, takes about 3 hours to complete

If you haven't go a new HU already, check out EONON on eBay .... http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQfgtpZ...ELQ3aAUQ3a1124 .... we bought a 675 NEW 7" TFT LCD TOUCH SCREEN TV MONITOR DVD PLAYER from them. Paid for it on the Monday night and got it that Thursday. Hubby's mate did same thing, so we know they're not dodgy! No probs fitting it to AU/XR8 dash - slipped straight in and wired up easy as. They have much better pricing than anything I could find around Brissy. Have fun! Mumma A.

How did you go with the depth of it? I fitted one to my brother in laws Mazda Protege, and it's about 30mm longer than the unit we took out, and so sticks out about 30mm more. Kind of looks OK, and works really well - especially considering the cheap price.

You need to temper that with "for the price".

Yes, for under $300, they are surprisingly good quality, but when compared to a Kenwood, JVC or pioneer unit (for example), they are pretty pov. But I guess at the end of the day, they offer 95% or so of the features, 70% of the usability, and around 50% of the sound quality, at around 20% of the price. You get what you pay for, and like I said, for the price, these are not too bad at all.

I recently bought an 838 model... touchscreen, bluetooth, usb, sdcard, blah, blah, blah.

I'll attempt a surround the same shape as Umineko's but in basic black (I really don't think my talents extend to the woodgrain finish).

I was in the market for a usb/bluetooth head unit so for a tad over $300 delivered it's worth a punt.

I'll revive this thread when I've got it installed
