Just a quick rant, whoever decided to run the speedo cable in a Mk II Escort so close to the exhaust should have to spend 5 minutes just as close to the exhaust and see if they enjoy the heat...
And while I'm at it, that clutch cable can be a PITA too... Ok, ok, I'm done.

My speedo cable is similarly damaged on the RS, but didn't seem to affect its operation?
Still, will replace it while it's all out. And that circlip was a pain in the neck, well so Ryan (AusXH) found out haha. Thanks Ryan! Tim |

It's just like the clutch cables when you fit extractors. Everything sits too close to the exhaust.
What you can do is zip tie them away from the exhaust in most places. Thats all I did. I didn't need to replace anything on my RS2000 in the 3 years I had it.

Clutch cables originally had a little bracket to help it sit away from the exhaust. Once extractors are fitted, the bracket usually didn't and so the clutch cable usually said hello to the extractors...
What about covering the clutch cable, exhaust and speedo cables with that thermal heat wrap, or what ever it is called???

Dunno if this will help, but i had the same problem, and it was a easy fix. Just got a cortina clutch cable, it's a bit longer and misses the extractors. the only problem it the cable may rest near the alt. Then covered the top of the cable with some thin metal tubing. worked well. As for the speedo cable.... it's pretty stuffed. It came off a few times and has the scars to show.

you can put the speedo cable inside the and drill a hole in the gearbox tunnel to line up to speedo drive
