Default Vic Number Plates - What is the new format?

Hey guys,

I know there was a thread on this a while back (though I couldn't find it!).

I heard on the radio that VicRoads decides the new numberplate format 6 months prior to their issue.

Does anyone know what they're going to change VIC numberplates to once the plates beginning in Y run out?

I say this - because only yesterday I saw a numberplate YZB-425 - which tells me that there is only 24,000 plates to go until they get to YZZ-999.

I would have thought that 24,000 registrations in the state of VIC would happen well within 6 months - though maybe I'm wrong.

Will Victoria go the same way as NSW (2letters,2numbers,2letters) or perhaps WA or SA (add on a letter or a number at the start?)

What are your thoughts?

PS - Wasn't the government asking for new concepts to the slogan on the numberplate? Did that get decided?

did they start at AAA-000?
In qld we started at N then O then P and then they went back to A
now we're up to S and i expect we'll just pull a NSW style 2-2-2 as that's what they did when they ran out of QG (govt) plates here

I heard they were going to just have your bank account number with the road tax cameras set up for direct debit.

This will save heaps of time and effort as there is no point in wasting the legal system's time or worse still possibly losing and having to refund.......

Hoping for 7 digits. So many more custom plate combinations to choose from.

Victorian plates in the existing format have just recently began at ZAA-001 so it won't be until they are finished with the Z series that a new format will be introduced.

I really hope they stay away from 7 characters. I find those WA and SA plates hard to read. They look too crowded and just don't look right IMO.

Also I really hope they don't go the way of NSW and do the AA.00.AA sequence. Again just doesn't look right.

If I were the decision maker I'd call for a list of all rego numbers from AAA.000 to AZZ.999 and re-issue all those not currently registered/used. When the "A" series is nearly through then do the same for "B" plates and so on.

Otherwise going numbers first ie 000.AAA would be OK.

Umm, no, read his post again. He was stating that the new format would be introduced at the conclusion of the Y series plates, which is incorrect.

LOL...

They are staying with 6 digits, but will be a combination of letters, numbers letters I believe, but won't be the same combo as other states already have.

Well in QLD we just lost the smart state plates *about time*!

Sunshine state only from now on.... saving the state $15,000 per year! Woohoo!

I am surprised they will use Z, Z used to be for Federal registered cars only, but it was a red Z

They've already started on Z.

I haven't seen the red Z rego plates for more than 20 years. I think the Federal Gov't cars went to "civilian" rego a long time ago.

actually from 2000 onwards

One rumour I heard for future Vic plates is V001-AAA although this is close to the "Euro" plate V-AA 001..won't be long.

I'd imagine they would start at ZXX-XXX after the Y series.

My next door neighbour recently purchased a new VE and the plates on the car are along the lines of YZK-XXX I think, so they are getting damn close.

On the topic, driving home from the city the other day I was behind a VX Commodore with the plates AAA-2XX. The plate was green, but in near mint condition. Wanted to take a photo but with my luck I would've been seen by the police.

They still use the red Z, I have seen 2 cars with a red Z on the plates this year.

Yup - I was under the assumption that 'Y' was the last ones - as I figured 'Z' was still Government plates (I saw a set on a new Statesman about 3 days ago - so I figured they're still using them).

But - if they're using 'Z' at the start, then I suppose that gives them 650,000 odd plates - until we have this conversation again.

When I bought the Nissan I tried for personalised plates.. ZZZ370 as well as heaps of others beginning with Z... All no go.
A mate mentioned it was because of the Commonwealth red Z plate thing?

Yep, they've started. I've seen ZAB_ _ _ (can't remember the numbers) on an old Honda so standard issue plates starting with Z are underway.

Don't forget that they'll go back through all the existing 6 digit configs that have been sent back and use those as well...

There are (theoretically) 17.5 million combinations available in total (26*26*26*10*10*10). According to ABS, only 4.2 million currently registered in Vic.

http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/9309.0

A long way to go before we run out.

Can confirm they have started to roll out the Z number plates. I spotted a dark blue MKII XR6 at Melbourne Airport today with ZAH _ _ _ standard issue plates.

Mine's an SA 7-character plate. Dunno what could be hard to read about it?

I think they look crap and also a good incentive to get personalised plates which maybe is the idea....

That way they can then have a national database that is in all the same format so to speak and easier to track vehicles from one state to another.

This is the format I was referring to as looking too crowded on the plate and hard to read. They just don't look right, in fact they look poxy.

Looks like in the future I'll carry my existing rego plates across all my cars....
