This was emailed to me today. I didn't think that it was a sure thing.

Carbon Tax to be Abolished

The Australian Government has announced details of its plans to repeal the carbon tax, including the equivalent carbon tax on synthetic greenhouse gases, from 1 July 2014.

Bills to repeal the carbon tax were tabled in Parliament on 12 November 2013. The bills were finalised after consultation with stakeholders.

Key points of the repeal bills for synthetic greenhouse gases are:

- The equivalent carbon tax will be repealed from 1 July 2014 and will not apply to imports of synthetic greenhouse gases made after this date. Synthetic greenhouse gas importers must pay the equivalent carbon tax on imports arriving in Australia up to 30 June 2014.

- To reduce the risk of refrigerant shortages before 1 July 2014, refrigerant imported from 1 April - 30 June 2014 will be exempt from the carbon tax if it is stored in a Customs warehouse and not released until after 1 July 2014.

- Applications for export refunds will be accepted up to 31 December 2015 for synthetic greenhouse gases imported before 1 July 2014 and exported before 1 July 2015.

- The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) will have new powers to monitor prices and take action against businesses that attempt to exploit other businesses and consumers by charging unreasonably high prices or making false or misleading claims about the effect of the carbon tax repeal on prices. This is to ensure that consumers benefit from expected price reductions following the removal of the carbon tax.

Polluters pay??? Ummm, no, prices get passed on to the consumer (taxpayer). And what a surprise, ALP claim the reduction in emissions was due to the tax, when in reality it was the reduction in consumption due to solar, and increased use of hydroelectric when one of the major mines was flooded and unuseable for months.

only in Australia can we cheer about the abolishment of one tax and the reintroducing of two new taxes a direct action tax and a paid parental leave on buisness tax.

We are not only cheering the abolishment of the carbon tax, but also the the sacking of the party that bought it in on a lie.

Two points to consider.
As a consumer you are the direct reason for pollution. If you didnt want the item, product or service it would not be made and its production would not pullute. Thus a user pays seems fair.
Secondly. Taxes are raised by governments to help fund running our country. If one tax is abolished another must be raised to earn the money to feed the machine.
A carbon tax dies a 20% gst rises?

Good point but I suppose if you are going to raise the GST it may be harder to lie about it? But anything is possible...

GST raise would not faze me, in fact I think it's overdue.

If it isn't raised then charge GST on goods bought over the internet. That'll raise funds to cover the red tape we are all in.

Just PO the carbon tax, paying tax on something that occurs naturally. Biggest rort in Australian history other than the Pyramid scheme.

Aren't we all polluters?

Own a home - building material, electricity, gas, pool, air conditioning, etc.
Drive - manufacturing of vehicle, petrol/LPG/Diesel/electric, oil, etc.
Public transport - as above.

These are costs that put pressure on our disposable income, so we need a pay rise. Which puts pressure on the economy. Not to mention that business will/must pass on the cost to the consumer.

So who pays the tax in the end?

True, but they can also own and run essential services for a direct income, instead of having the populous pay private share holders while the gov claims a little bit of tax from them.

The carbon tax was income redistribution dressed up as environmental policy. It wasn't used for running the country, it was spending money for 'working families'

Remove carbon tax, raise taxes on smokes and alcohol, smokes could be $750 a pack and suckers would still buy them lol.

Legalise weed and tax the crap out of it, then come down hard on dealers.

Raise GST to 20%.

Politicians can take a pay and perks cut too while I'm pulling it.

Doesnt matter how you dress it up and what you call it, its a tax, goes into the governments coffers and comes out the other side as payments to staff, contracts, interest on borrowings, social support and bribery. Oh Um I mean middle class welfare.

Both the present CO2 tax and the proposed Direct Action tax are imo an abomination!

Both parties need to take a deep hard look at the overwhelming HARM these taxes do to the Australian economy and our way of life. Even if you truly believe CO2 is harmful, then the CO2 tax is a proven monumental failure, it achieved a poof-teenth of Sweet-F-All reducing CO2 but has cost billions in its implementation and compliance. No gain all pain.

The other thing that needs to be noted is the tide has well and truly turned on the CO2 alarmists, every day another one of their dooms-day predictions fail.

I know this is politics but, the ALP/Greens are being set up for an almighty shellacking ... they should have let go of the disastrous CO2 tax when they had a chance.
