so PLEASE take that moment to check for riders we can be difficult to see at times

With the increasing size of modern A pillars, it is little wonder there aren't more accidents involving motor cyclists, especially at roundabouts.

Are you sure it was the car's fault? Just asking........

Bike riders need to be super aware of what's around them - if only to ensure that they don't get killed on the roads. One reason I've never had a bike (as much as I'd like to). But yes, a lot of motorists have no idea and don't look out for other cars, let alone bikes. Burka wearing drivers are the worst (not being religionist/racist - just a fact!)

Sorry to hear about your mate, I hope he recovers okay, and that the car driver at least had the decency to stop.

There are plenty of incompetent car drivers around, as well as bike riders. I actually yelled at a motorbike rider today for driving up the left side of me in traffic, between a parked car and myself...luckily I have a habit of checking both mirrors and not just the one...he came very close to being a car sandwich!

The fact is, there are idiots everywhere, it's rare to see anyone with sound competence in their abilities be it car, truck, motorbike or pushbike. Also, if you choose to ride a bike, push or motor, you're unfortunately making yourself more vulnerable by taking the less protective option. I'd love to ride a motorbike but not in modern traffic. It's bad news that your mate was injured, hope he recovers well, but roads were designed for cars and people who drive cars are generally idiots.

Was it a motorbike? That's the vibe i was getting.

I always take care to look out for motorbike riders, as a lot of my mates, also my mother rides motorbikes. They are fairly simple to spot, when they arnt darting in between cars, opening the throttle right up so they come out of no where, it works both ways.

cyclists on the other hand, (SOME of them, not all) are so bloody arrogant, the road rules are clear, 2 abreast, and as far left as possible, SOME of these cyclists that sit 4 wide in the middle of the lane are asking to be hit!

If damaged, I suggest your friend sue the VICROADS and VIC GovCo for NOT enforcing its requirment to prohibit from "motorways and similar roads class roads"; cycles, pedestrians, tractors, animals. This is a contracting requirement of the UN Convention on Road Traffic, Signs and Signals.

Your friends outcome is a primary reason why this requirement exists at law, the other is for throughput efficiency; a motorway is not safe or efficient when it is shut-down because a pedal cyclist is hit.

ARTICLE 25 - 1968 editon CURRENT - includes amendments to date.
Motorways and similar roads:-
1. On motorways and, if so provided in domestic legislation, on special
approach roads to and exit roads from motorways:

(a) The use of the road shall be prohibited to pedestrians, animals ,
cycles, mopeds unless they are treated as motor cycles, and all vehicles other than motor vehicles and their trailers, and to motor vehicles or motor-vehicle trailers which are incapable, by virtue of their design, of attaining on a flat road a speed specified by domestic legislation;

AUS contracted the 49' Convention (Gazz 53') and we have accepted in doing so ongoing harmonization. As the years progress, public servants 'forget' where certain road rules and requirements derive in source, that, coupled with political correctness manifesting itself as militant cycle advocacy has seen some 'dumb' road authorities allow cycles onto freeway class roads. Sorry, its a no no. Even cycle mad Denmark doesn't permit that level of stupidity, as they too are bound - and have not forgotten this UN requirment. The PROHIBITION signs you see on some remaining freeway lengths are a direct result of this requirement.

IF your friend disobeyed a PROHIBITION SIGN and another motorised party is aggrieved somehow (a front fog light might be damaged causing severe emotional distress); then that party has some legal comeback at such a disobedient cyclist.

IF OP refers to a motorcycle - then this does not apply:-)

That's a good point Keepleft, that's why i was trying to work out if he was on a pushbike or a motorcycle. There are placarded warnings on the western ring saying that bikes are not allowed. I think it even says no tractors? lol

Every motorcyclist should learn that if they cut someone off and it doesn't go well the car will always win. I've lost count of the amount of times ive been cut off by motorcyclists thinking im in a slow work ute forcing me to hit the picks

sorry guys but davenl5l is correct
you learn so much more on the road when on a motorbike than just sitting in you cage driving down the road
the biggest thing you learn is to look and not trust everyone around you, makes for a better car driver

yes there are times when both car and bike do stupid stuff but for a cage driver they have the added protection and wont hurt themselves if they get in a small bingle were as the bike rider can die if someone doesnt check their blind spot

sorry bud but don't paint everyone with the same brush. I did not need to ride a motorbike to learn not to trust anyone around you. It came with basic common sense and it's also part of basic defensive driving. Always allow and adjust for other peoples mistakes, and try to think a few steps ahead. Then again the last bit was part of my pilot training. It's still pretty obvious to those who have a clue though. It doesn't take someone to ride a motorbike to 'learn more about how to drive'. I've given plenty of courtesy to motorcyclists, and rarely get any in return. In fact i get more courtesy and respect in return from trucks.

We haven't even established whether the OP is talking about a pushy yet, which is a totally different shade of grey.

This thread is destined to end badly.

haha i agrre with you Professor it will end badly i can see it now

im not painting everyone with the same brush either but 95%of them haha

hey i even thought i was a great driver too(been driving since i was 7) but when i took up roadbike after years of dirtbike there was so much i learnt that i now use for driving my cars
also anyone that has done some form of motor sport makes them a better driver i recon whether is bikes, kart or cars etc you just learn so much and it helps on the road as you are just more aware on whats happening around you
also agree with you on the courtesy of some bike riders but i could say that about some car drivers ..no matter what happens in life you are always going to get some knob that will **** you off

indeed. I have a friend who rides and they explained a few things like why bike riders try to push to the front of traffic, why they hate being tailgated etc (not that i do that) and so on. But what are the things you learnt after riding a roadbike? I'll see if i do it already. Sharing with the community will help educate.

thats it, its easy to criticize motorbike riders as being careless, but sometimes what appears to be reckless is simply the bike rider taking the safer option for him/her.
theres been times riding in brisbane cbd traffic where ive had to dart between cars, probably giving the car drivers a near heart attack. but of course all they see is some reckless rider trying to jump the queue.
what they dont see is the car coming up way too fast behind the bike, or the car that decided it wanted the bikes space on the road, leaving the rider nowhere to go, but straight up the guts.

its one massive advantage bikes have, and thats the ability to sometimes accelerate away from danger. the flip side of it is it can make us look reckless.

now i generally dont lane split, i dont trust car drivers enough, not to mention the legality side of it. but when you get stuck behind an old diesel patrol or something else that hasnt seen the pits since last century the last place you want to be is sitting there inhaling those diesel fumes. so on odd occasions i will. but most of the time the traffic flows well enough that i dont need to.

i also know bike riders are not angels, every time im out i see something that makes me cringe, but i see the same no matter what vehicle it is.

I've ridden bikes

-Never sit beside a car or in their blindspot on your bike if you want to live.
-Never split lanes at any speed.

I don't see how a car could hit a bike on a fwy unless they were doing on of those two things. Unless the car violently swerved for some unknown reason.

The amount of times I've checked to overtake, *clear* flick indicator on and go to overtake only to find a bike has popped up out of nowhere splitting left, splitting right and nearly sent them flying...

I lane split all the time in slow peak hour traffic, because guess what, in WA it's legal. And I've never had a problem or bingle doing it. Then again, I've never had a bingle riding my motorbike at all.

But those morons that lane split on the freeway (particularly in shorts t shirt and thongs) when the prevailing traffic speed is already up to or near the limit are simply asking for it. How one of them hasn't been clobbered and killed yet surprises the crap out of me.

Motorcycle riders can be their own worst enemy, however some some drivers simply do not have a clue. It takes all sorts and one is not better than the other.

Why the car? A bike rider turning her head right can be observed steering>>> right and presto; yet another fatality on my F3.

Think too, buffetting from passing traffic @110-200km/h plus.

They are banned by International law from freeway class roads for good reason, and we have the kill stats domestically to show its 'dumb' to ignore that rule. Breakdown lanes are not safe, not even for cars/trucks/utes that have stopped.

These are high-speed environments, we don't need to encourage slow and stopped 'obstructions' that equal; 'disaster_in_waiting'.
