Brakes - OEM or Aftermarket?

Hey all

time has come to change the front brakepads on the little Zetec.

Ford has quoted some ridiculous figure imo to do such a simple job (cheap labour ($85), expensive parts ($210)).

So the big questions are...

1. are there any differences between brake pads available (Ford OEM vs something like Bendix)
2. anyone tried after market or performance pads on standard disks?
3. Any info on comparos?

Any other considerations?

you are looking for EBC Greenstuff Pads...and DBA discs....contact Hyperkid im sure he got some new discs or pads...not sure. but they are the 2 you are looking for......

210-dollar front brake pads... WOW! they must be serious stuff!

I bought Bendix (which is good) front brake pads for $75 a pair. Might get some mechanic to install them later on.

Yeah, crazy isn't it! I dug around a little and find that a few people are using EBC Greenstuff so depending on price I'll give that a shot. If its not worth it, I'll go for the Bendix you mention above... thanks for the advice.

Hey is the 45000 service include brakes??? I also got some pads onhold at a mates workshop but dont know the specifics.

Hey guys

just rang a reputable brake and suspension chain store for a quote, they said that I'd most likely have to change the discs! After 50,000km??

I'd say that if someone's pads are lasting such a distance, they'd be pretty gentle with the brakes!

Anyone been told to change their discs so early?

OK... latest venture into the Fiesta braking world...

Stopped by Australia's Best on the weekend where they pulled off the wheels and looked at me like I was a twit. The guy looked at me and said that there's probably another 15 to 20,000Km left on the current pads.

Thanks to the guys here, I've saved a little coin which will go to new wheels or better brakes when they are actually needed! I'll definitely go back to these guys because they were so up front and honest about the work (not like my Ford dealer where I had my last service done).

That's my rant and kudos for the day, all in one!

guys sorry to bring this back

but my car needs the pads and discs changed they cant be machined as they are below 20mm thick!

so thats $350 with Discs, Bendix pads and labour.. supposedly its $200 for the Discs and $150 for the pads (both with install).

Did i get ripped off?

The quote is not a bad overall price I think. Mine are also coming up for replacement and I was expecting to spend about the same. If my discs are not worn I may go with aftermarket pads for a little more bight and braking performance. If the discs need replacing I might also put some aftermarket discs depending on cost.

I replaced the discs and pads on my ex's Barina a few years ago and spent >$500 for all OEM stuff from Holden. Boy did I feel ripped off!

How much mileage have you got out of your current set of pads/discs?

Flamin... dug through my notes and found this - could not find who actually sent it to me, so thanks goes out to whoever...

"Do some research on Lucas pads- they get very good reviews on price vs performance. Ferodo DS2500's or Bendix Ultimates would be two others worth a look for hard drivers.

Whilst I've had Greenstuffs (and liked them) I think there are better buys out there. PS: sounds like a brake fluid change and bleed could help out with the spongey feel."

hey one of my friends work at autobarn and we had look in the Ferodo or Bendix book. and it says there 2 type of front brake pad in it and i dont know what one it would be for
