The Skyhawks were dropping 500lb bombs (IIRC) and we were able to watch from an elevated position a km or so (my estimate) away from the target. After that we moved to the gunnery range where we stood on the gunnery range control tower, only a couple of hundred meters perpendicular to the centre line of fire. Watching the Skyhawks, at the same height as you, firing their cannons was an experience I will never forget.

It was shortly after that the Skyhawks were retired from service, and I believe that was the last time the range was used for aircraft bombing and gunnery exercises.

Not something most people would get to experience in their lives!

...her ally otter boards looked ok to but not much else, she looks like she landed upside down when she sank and has done a bit of rolling around in the currents.

Don't you just love old timber boats, there was a guy at the marina in Newcastle who imported a beaut old timber Chris Craft launch from the states, it arrived several months later (drying out her carvel planking along the way) she took on lots of water when lowered off the ship around the corner at Carrington docks with some frantic pumping on the journey around to the marina. Finally after several days back in the water her planking started to take up the gaps. We had the berth oppsite it and kept watch for the owner looking for any signs she was settling any lower in the water.
Fishing fleet at Coffs and Newcastle is a mix of steel, wood and glass boats in various states of decay similar to this one I guess.

She would make a great liveaboard conversion with that beam and LOA.

The Flopper stoppers look to be of Stainless construction in that pic, I tried to make some for the first fishing boat (cruiser) conversion I did (out of wood ?? yikes) but ended up building a tablenacle mast stepped on deck using a Gaff rig to steady the rolling round bilge it had.

Seems flat bottom cruisers and round bottom cruiser like to roll the most, flat bottom Halvorsen are known for it.

A lot of flopper stoppers are made of wood and epoxied to make them last so you where on the right track most trawlers use paravanes (birds or fish) as they work well underway as opposed to a flopper stopper that is mainly used at anchor, most are made out of mild (gal) steel, aluminium or if you have the dollars SS, the one in question went with the cheaper of the three, there's only one here so I'm guessing the other is still out on the sea bed.

Below you can see two rusty paravanes on the top of the outriggers on the trawler berthed next to me, you can also see the top of the recovered trawler behind closed doors ashore, AMSA are crawling all over it.

Just received one of those "on this day 2 years ago" messages about photos i took on my phone back then, and Ironically, it's exactly 2 years to the day that the fishing vessel Dianne was lifted out here, unfortunately that sinking didn't end well at all https://au.news.yahoo.com/no-bodies-...-39303049.html

Bit hard to see, a Hobby Falcon in a tree at my local park (phone camera zoomed in to the max).
Every year an adult and young one turn up and terrorise the local birds, great to watch them in action chasing cockys and wattle birds.

Hows this for coincidence, last week I was looking at a Catalina (as above), then yesterday my daughter in Broome said they had a very low tide so walked out to look at the wreck of a Catalina destroyed at anchor in Roebuck Bay Broome by a Japanese Zero during WW2. A little known fact, most Aussies knew about Darwin being attacked.

Exert from Clubmarine web site.
"At 9:30 am on March 3, 1942, nine Japanese Zero fighter aircraft (from their newly occupied base in Timor) attacked the pearling town without warning. Lasting less than an hour, the attack was devastating. Some 25 American, British, Dutch and Australian aircraft were destroyed. Of the well over 40 official casualties, many were Dutch women and children, who were packed aboard 16 flying boats - Catalinas, Short Empires and Dorniers - anchored in what was believed to be the safe haven of Roebuck Bay. At the time they were either waiting to be unloaded and ferried ashore or being readied to fly further south."
