Default NSW Highway patrol BMW’s

Quick question,

I was at Kloster BMW dropping my X5m off for some warranty work, and saw a NSW Bmw Highway car in the back yard. Spoke to the service manager about what engine they had in them and he said they have the 2.0 litre diesel turbo. Really??? I think he is wrong can anyone clarify please!!!!

Pretty big problems if the service manager doesn't know what sort of engine is in a car

I was under the impression they were all 530d's.
They might be switching to 520d's with the way the economy is going.

They are a technically brilliant, i mean, the HD screens i've seen inside of them are better than whats hanging on my wall.
It identified a number plate and showed the officer information in real time.
Very Cool!!

Yep you'd be right!

It's unknown whether the police-spec versions get any engine modifications, though the consumer version's 5.7-seconds 0-100km/h is already brisk.

Highway Patrol have a single turbo 3 litre 6 diesel engine. All are 530d.

Standard engine and m sport brakes.

195kw, 620nm. Gives quite a kick and will spin 1st, and chirp 2nd, and 3rd in m sport mode on manual shift using paddles.

Fun car to drive...

I should know, I own one.

All that bottom end torque makes it more punchy around town than the mustang. Being a diesel it runs out of revs too soon. But anyway, that's not what I bought it for. Its a great daily drive

That’s what I thought. It definitely had 4 piston from brake calipers. Painted blue, probably Brembos

Last I heard these were nearly $200k on the road with all their equipment.

Surely a V6 Camry would have made alot more economic sense.

One of Our local HWP vehicles is a 200 series LC..

This Morning 3rd of April I was on the way to Tarcutta to pay my respect to all those Truck drivers who have died on Australian roads at The Australian Truck Drivers Memorial Wall as I drove a truck for ten years.

About 20 k or so past the Yass turn off but on the other side of the road car white car went past very fast followed about a few kilometers behind was a Highway Patrol BMW and he was flying lights and siren on.

I read that in Queensland that the Highway Patrol there are using Kia Stingers.

They are leased and the police said they cost no more than the out going SS commodore.

How can they possibly be the same cost when the initial cost is probably double and then resale value a lower percentage,Don’t believe everything a cop tells you.The cop on the street wouldn’t have a clue or care and those that do the purchasing will tell whatever lies it takes to justify their jobs

No I didn’t miss the leased part at all.Bottom line is a lease is based on cost of the vehicle and resale value at the end of period.I am not conversant with lease percentage of value, but I presume the lessor would want to make maybe 20% margin,so the lease figure on a 60k car will be a lot lower than a 150k car.If lease costs were the same we would all lease Merc Amgs instead of corollas wouldn’t we?

Back in 2000 my dad paid a premium on the benz ml320 he ordered to delete options. So no leather seats, no sunroof. Pretty much payed extra for a bare bones car. It took 6 months to be delivered. You pay more for less. The ML was used as a tow car and a general get things done car, so it wasnt treated well. But german cars, you can get them in basic spec. Im assuming bmw does the same, charging more for less.

Sounds like you’ve had a sour experience with the police.

A lot of factors at play here. The BMW is a factory spec police car, so its not the same as the road going car. Which would effect the price. Plus the fleet pricing however BMW works that. There will be a massive fuel use difference vs the commodore. BMW May do a servicing deal for them too.

At the end of the lease BMW take them back and then do whatever they do with them presumably with an agreed value at play or at a set term or kms.

Therefore it does make sense that these BMWs may cost no more than the commodore over the lifetime of the car as stated. It’s all about the weekly payment, not the out right cost of the car.

I think the cost savings argument comes from the fact these are factory spec police cars and require less special fit-out after manufacture.

They'll keep the police garages busy ...BMW's can be a bit 'high maintenance' and exxy to fix ...or they used to be .

or....what about this Bimmer ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nrdHqUoOcw...800 hp Turbo Barra E46..
