I found a list of historic petrol prices in Australia going back to 1925.

https://www.bitre.gov.au/sites/default/files/is_082.pdf (second last page)

Keep in mind it is in nominal dollars, it does not account for inflation. There is a CPI deflator in there if you wish to convert it to current dollars. (Edit: The CPI deflator is in 2011 dollars. You need two jumps to get to 2020. For example, 1974>2011. 2011 > 2020). For example, the price of fuel of 12.1c in 1974 is approximately 84c/l in 2020. But also keep in mind that excludes changes in fuel excise etc.

Whether or not you are interested in geopolitics there is an increasing amount of commentary relating to world oil prices and production. For a start I suggest Gareth Hutchens article " The world's energy order is changing - and China is set to reap the strategic benefits" and on youtube "Saudi Aramco; The company and the State".

It's really about $25 a barrel, but because the companies they supply to have full storages they they have to pay people to take it away.

Same as whats happening on the wholesale electricity spot market right now; current price is -$40/MWh. We'd rather pay people to consume the electricity we produce than have to come off. It costs a lot more to have to shut down one of our units and restart than pay people to use our electricity.

Unfortunately, no. As always, the retailers are the ones who absorb the costs (either savings or otherwise). Of course, those retailers who are not vertically integrated and have generation assets themselves, hedge their bets such that it is very unlikely they miss out. It is generally the consumer who bears that cost.

Anyway, sorry to stray off topic. Cheapest I have seen in town for 91 is 115.9. You guys in the big smoke have it good!

For context our CM said he wants petrol to be <$1 a litre or they would put caps on so they did the bare minimum to comply .
