Default Hypothetical First Car Thread

Good afternoon all,

Thought this one could be some fun to get some different perspectives on this one, no doubt we've all been asked 'whats the best first car for my child' scenario by family friends in the past.

The scenario is:
  • 17 year old 'non binary' child (about to turn 18 to get Ps, we're playing VIC rules)
  • You can spend up to $15K maximum, but bonus points for saving dollars where possible.
  • Play in a price bracket - IE sub $5000, $5000-$10,000, $10,000-$15,000, so we cover a range of budgets.
  • Has to be Carsales links - no Facebook Marketplace.
  • You have to explain why you have promoted what you did

The below are my entries into the hypothetical first car challenge ($10,000-$15,000, premium first cars for the discerning P plater)

VEII Commodore (straight LPG):

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...21345083/?Cr=0

VEII Commodore Ute (straight LPG):

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...21438339/?Cr=0

BF MkII Wagon eGas:

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...14120721/?Cr=0

FGII G6 Ecoboost:

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...14023327/?Cr=0

$5000-$10,000 entrant:

SY MKII Territory:

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...4276655/?Cr=16

Right off the bat I'm putting the VE Commodore straight LPG jobs up the top, they generally have a lower buy price than their Falcon equivalents.

VE sedan doesn't have the same rear suspension issues as the BA onwards sedan, compared to an eGas their vapor LPG setup is superior, although it loses out compared to the superior EcoLPI on power/torque it has a cheaper entry point, although exchanges suspension problem for potential timing chain drama.

The VE ute is thrown in, benefits of only being able to carry one passenger instead of a car load of their friends, good for a budding tradie to get them through their apprenticeship, although the load capacity of the VE ute isn't as good as a Falcon ute.

BF MKII Wagon, eGas is down on power compared to their Holden equivalents, but the wagon doesn't have the sedans problematic rear suspension, generally faultless aside from the common niggly B series Falcon problems, good option for a budding tradie as these things can take some serious weight in the back with a bit more security than a ute as a bonus.

FGII G6 Ecoboost is my option for the car enthusiast P plater that slides one past the parents and the police, you take on the rear suspension problem + the niggly Falcon issues, but gain a mint tuning platform in the form of forced induction 4 cylinder. A FMIC (painted black), intake, exhaust and a tune and you'll break over 200KW/wheels, EFR6258 and you'll go over the 250KW+ mark all while flying under the radar of your local police.

SY MKII Territory for those who want an SUV, you might as well as have the one with the best driving dynamics and cheapest to repair, with the downside being suspension troubles and a thirst for fuel, this one seems cheap to buy, deceased estate job.

All local cars, all with their set of foibles but you can buy parts from your local IGA for all these, safe and solid options for a first car that your child is going to come out of if they have a mild stack or someone drives into them.

Jeep Wrangler

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...13447341/?Cr=5

Without too much thought to upkeep, maintence etc.

I have two daughters a long way off being in a position to drive but for them I wanted to try and provide a car that had some character.

> Needs character
> Must be manual as they must get manual license

My first choice was a Toyota 86 manual, but the cheapies that were around a few months ago aren't there at the moment at the 15k mark.

I'll probably wise up between now and then, at least with the added assurance of safety etc.

Bold move there on the Jeep

The 4L I6 variation is the pick of the bunch though, its not afflicted by the usual Jeep powertrain problems.

I’ve got two, they’re both red.

In the spirit of Jørn Utzon, I’m ignoring the budget upper limit. A motivated dealer should come to the party. Compact but with room for friends, a durable diesel/manual driveline, space for weekends away that parents don’t need to know about and not too thirsty. Parts supply out the wazoo, and equally suited to weekday activities as recreational driving.

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...1399768/?Cr=50

My second nomination, an icon to the parents’ generation. Practical, cheery and frugal. In the spirit of non-binarity, it identifies as a both a car and a trauma-informed safe space. Convenient storage for the security blanket is included.

I reckon that thing wouldn't go up a hill with me on it, would have to break out the spandex and sweat bands and bust out some 1990s TV aerobics.

You can shop outside of Ford and Holden, it just means you're making poor decisions

honestly i'd avoid all gas / lpg models unless you have no intention of leaving your city, cause for example bathurst has one lpg pump at one servo thats it and further you got out less and less chance of finding a fuel source

Not a bad suggestion, plus 10 year certification costs, my three LPG suggestions probably aren't suitable for non Melburnian 'non-binary' children

But for Melbourne and surrounds LPG is mint, available everywhere and $.85/L, probably wouldn't attempt a road trip with it but as an A to B daily, goes alright.

I suspect the people paying $0.85/L-$1/L for LPG were the ones laughing when everyone else was paying $2/L+ for 91

LPG availability isn't a problem within VIC, unless you want to drive to Alice Springs.

Or are you one of these people who thinks that tomorrow everyone is going to be driving EVs

The driveline is solid, get the lowest k best kept example yadda yadda

Why the AU? Because like naming your son 'Sue', the looks and the teasing from mates (and strangers) will make them tough. But, the message is inner strength, if you can see it. Then there's the meme-cred for the gamer generation. The wagon enables all sorts of country travel adventures. Also, great at attracting the right kind of partner for them, not the superficial kind who only see looks and image; could save a fortune in an avoided future divorce. If they are loved after first impressions are made in an AU, well, that person is a keeper.

Here's mine for 5k - 10k.

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...4357130/?Cr=15

Why? Why not? Pretty bullet proof and good on fuel, handles well and cheap to service.

I'd look for something in the price range with 5 Star Safety rating. There is an option for this on the Carsales site.

Does the person in mind have a preference for a model type? When I look for someone I prefer to find something they like. There are many options such as Aussie sedans to small Japanese hatchbacks.

A small Japanese or Kia/Hyundai manual. That is the sensible choice. A Commodore or Falcon was a good choice ten years ago but most are too old now. The actual choice has to be made by the person who will be driving it. No point in a parent pushing them into something they hate. Also they should pay for it with their own money. That is a very good lesson in managing their finances.

Have you considered a Suzuki Hayabusa?
It has a smooth 1.3 4 cylinder engine and a lot of electronics to keep you safe. Japanese build quality. Super reliable.
They are said to be great for learners too. $28,000 brand new drive away.

But they only do 140 km/h in first gear ?

We went Hyundai i30 and FG2 xr6.
Toyota a solid choice, as well as older falcons like AU.
Why? reliability, crashability, parts and insurance pricing. Suitable for our driving which involves hours at 100km/hr

Also capable of 9 second quarter mile which is a safety feature. You’ll be way ahead of any traffic which keeps you safer. You can’t be in an accident if you’re not there.

Cheap on fuel $40 = 600ks, more if its a MHD (start stop crap) so they wont bother me when they need fuel
Wont take up a full car space on the driveway, more room for my cars
Plastic panels for all those love taps that happen while still learning, stay neat looking for longer
Rear engine rear wheel drive 2 seater with paddle shifts like a Ferrari , similarity stops there, but good selling point
Cheap to service, only 3 spark plugs
Has heated seats, air con, electric windows, Abs brakes
Is a manual with no clutch pedal, can be driven as a Auto when you feel lazy.
