Smile Question for LT TDCI owner

Hi All,

I've just joined this forum, great to know Ford have their own forum too.
I've just bought a 2007 TDCI with 70000kms on it from Adelaide.
Drove the car back from Adelaide to Melbourne with only +/- $60 spent on diesel
Awesome drive, awesome car, love the effortless power on cruising.

Can the TDCI owner here share some info with me:

1. Does other TDCI have this whining noise from under the bonnet, you can hear it especially when your turn the engine off, the whining noise slowly diseappear?

2. Another whining noise and only on idle when the Aircon is ON, Is this normal?

Great if someone can verify this noise with me

I have an LV and it does the same thing for number 1. I just assume it's normal? How slow is slowly? The whine I hear is gone in 2-3 seconds I think. (sorta like the turbo spooling down)

Can't comment on number 2 however.

The wind down noise is the hydraulic steering, as for the air con besides the fan there shouldn't really be a "whine".

I have a 2008 TDCI LT Focus. They are really great cars.

My car makes both of those noises that you describe. Whether it's normal or not i don't know, but given we both hear them, it might be! I will be taking my car in to Ford for a 60,000km service soon and will be bringing their attention to the aircon noise. Will let you know the outcome.

Oops, mine actually a 2008 LT model, not 2007

Thanks guys for the confirmation.
So the spooling down noise is normal from hydraulic power steering when you turn the engine off.
I thought it was the water pump problem, or turbo spooling down problem.

To Spasticbus,
It'll be great if could let us know the outcome with the Aircon low grumbling noise.

I only have 5 mths warranty, so probably fixing it before will be better.

Yer my warranty runs out in June. I've researched the noise a bit and some other people have reported what seems to be a related aircon noise in other cars (not Focus).

My LV did the same whine when turning off, it slowly dies out after you kill the engine.

And my petrol LV makes the same noise, so it must be the steering, as suggested above, or at least something that's normal.

Gooday there...Just my two bobs worth..Yes I have a 2007 TDCI 6 SPEED Manual....I used to think the " winding-down" noise at the end of a trip was the Turbo, but after a bit of research , I am convinced that this is the " Electro-Hydraulic" steering system used on the vehicle.It would seem we all have the same noise happening, so be happy and enjoy your lovely little " rattler"

Well car was serviced today. Some things have come about that i'm not happy about which i think ended up causing some tension between me and the service department. But regarding the aircon, it was hard for them to diagnose because you can't really hear it all the time when the car is sitting idling. It's something you hear when you're driving around and changing gears. More than likely they said it's the air-con belt which will need to be replaced and adjusted. But kinda ran out of time as i needed the car back.

Hey guys
this is great to read about your TDCi experiences.
I'm new to this website and a new member as well. A couple of months ago I bought S/H one 2.0L/ 01/10 LV and its beautiful to drive!!!!!!!!!! and the torque!!!! This is my first diesel and I always service my own cars. Does anybody know how to: Q1- change a fuel filter on this model?
Q2-Repairs / Maintenance manual book/CD availability? (apart dealers)
Q3-Anybody using additives in oil or fuel?

Q1: Be careful as if you get air in the fuel system, your car won't start until you get that air out! Make sure the filter is full of diesel before fitting maybe.
Q2: You can check the car servicing website to see what each service interval is and the work that is done.
Q3: I don't use any and unsure why you would.

RE Q1: There must be a way how to bleed the fuel system post filter change. On mine there is nipple-like bleeder on the top, is this it?
To change the filter, is it twist top to open ? do you know?
Q2: I'm mainly after the Repair manual. Will have to chase that.
Q3: I was told and also numerous websites say that diesel fuel can grow
algae and especially heated diesel that circulates through the pump back to fuel tank etc.This applies mainly I believe if you do low mileage and if it takes you more then a month to refil the tank. Also it breaks down/emulsifies and disperses water in the tank, so they say. As you know water is bad for the pumps and injectors and repairs are very expensive. Currently I'm looking into a brand called DIESEL POWER and getting spec sheet info. Quite a number of people recommended this one (4WD people mainly) and especially if you have to fill up in small country towns as the diesel fuel turnover is not so high. Anyway will have to do more search.

Hey all,

I just bought few parts for my first TDCi service, I went to Ford dealer and get the parts. Then cross checked with Burson store for price, Burson actually have all of them parts with lower price too.

Oil Filter (Catridge Type): Ford $35 Burson $25
Air Filter: Ford $60 Burson $52
Fuel Filter (Catridge Type): Ford $64 Burson $61

Now I just have to find sometimes and replace all these filters, as of my knowledge these filters play vital parts in our engine performance.

@Spasticbus: You're right, its very important to bleed all air from fuel filter after replacing them. In the old diesel engine they have manual pump to bleed the air out, I havent checked with our car yet, but im sure there must be a way to do it. even if we have to pre-fill the filter with diesel first.

I'll let you guys know how it goes after i've done it.

Would be interested to find out how you go. My LT ran out of gas and i ended up getting it towed to Ford to bleed the air out of the system.

Haynes says to disconnect the outlet hose from the filter and attach a hand held vacuum pump to the filter outlet until fuel emerges from the filter. Reconnect hose and operate starter. I haven't done it yet. Been looking for a suitable hand held vacuum pump.

turn ignition on for three seconds turn off for five, repeat three times..
then crank engine as per normal, repeat if nessesary if fail to start...

common rail diesels are self primeing, same as a petrol one..

under no cercumstances should anybody play with the fuel line on a common rail diesel!!

My apologies for quoting from such an erroneous book. Luckily we can warn Drez not to disconnect the fuel lines before he changes the fuel filter.
As a matter of interest I wonder why Spasticbus needed to have his car towed to a Ford dealer to get the system bled if they are self priming?

like most people they dont read their owners manuel fully.
some people just want the ipod to work, thats possably the only time the book is referanced.

I've got all the parts from Ford this time, I went to Burson just to cross checked the pricing.
But once my warranty finish in the next few mths, I think i would just get it from Burson.
Since the oil filter catridge I've got from Ford dealer, it isn't Ford original parts, it some Thailand branded name.
