If you East Coaster's are not aware, it looks like WA is set to trial Daylight Saving for three years...I am all for it. I grew up in NSW with it and it's wonderful...I get home from work and its not dark...I could have a beer with Dad or go for a walk with the Dog or whatever...I loved summer for it.
So why the hell are people arguing against it?? I've heard them all.."it gets to hot and what about our farmers" etc etc...and i'm thinking...well..do you hear NSW/QLD Farmers Complaining about it?? PS...why the hell can't they show NRL or NRU Games at decent hours instead of freakin 2AM?? WHY? And WHY does the West Australian think we want to know what Chris Judd and the W.C eagles get up to everyday??? I just think theres to much of an US and THEM mentality and it s#!ts me!!! :

About time too. WA is a great place to live, but we do have some catching up with the rest of the world to do. DST is a good start, improving our liquor laws is also a good idea (depsite what that peanut from the AHA claims). All we need to do now is develop our foreshore to make it so that people want to go there and allow us extended trading hours (without the greens / bleeding hearts hijacking the referendum) and W would be perfect. Rant over.

Not interested in daylight saving.
I like it light early so it makes it easier for me to get up in the morning therefore the WA should be with me. HAHAHA

I dont care either way. I dont really see the point in changing it. We're doing fine atm. Is that extra hour sun light at the end of the day really going to make a difference?
In regards to the NRL, theres no point in Channel 9 putting it on in prime time when no ones going to watch it. Theres not enough following here in WA. |

Probably for the same reason they won't show AFL games Live in NSW, scared to try it. Plenty of Rugby fans around when I was living around Rockingham. The TV Networks should be forced to show all AFL & NRL games live into each state. They by the rights to show them and then put on some third rate crap movie and show the footy at some ridiculous hour.

i hate the idea. i have to get up at 4am to go to work at the moment and it's even harder in winter in the dark. so by body clock time in summer i'll be getting up at 3am to go to work and going to bed at 7pm when it's still light! that's ridiculous, i get sick enough already from lack of sleep!
also if you want an extra hour a day in the sun get up an hour earlier you idiots! take the dog for a walk in the morning, go for a run whatever in the morning. and for you eastern staters this time it's not the public vote it's being voted for in parliment and something like 70% of the pollies say they are all for it. thats whats annoying me, govt is making the decision then we go to the polls after a 3yr trial. personally i think there should be a poll before it is implemented as a trial, if the trial gets the go ahead do the trial period then back into the polls after the trial and vote to actually keep it or give it the absolute flick.

Haha, great - might actually get some useable time to talk to the perth office!
So, what's life like in perth without DST? Does it get dark pretty early?

As for business opening earlier, customers will still want them open until the same time in the evening. So business will just end up being open longer. The last referendum was in 1992. The population has changed since then and we now get another chance to experience DST. Further, a three year trial will give us a better opportunity to see what it is like, as opposed to a half a summer that the last referendum was based on. Anyway, we dont get a referendum on anything else that politicians introduce. Should schools introduce OBE? Were we asked if we wanted speed cameras? When was the last time a politicans pay rise was put to the public? I have yet to hear one decent arguement against DST that cant be countered with a little bit of thought. Curtains wont fade, cows will still produce milk, chickens will still lay eggs and kids will be able to sleep at night. Most places in the world have daylight saving and they still function. Try it. |

Went there to get married last January. When we arrived I asked the cab driver what time it got dark and I was shocked when he said 7PM!!! But the sunset was nice and we had more night time to do the honeymoon stuff. Europe is great in summer, you get 15 hours of daylight to see and do stuff.

shoulda left it how it was. What about winter? Shall we have a daylight saving there too so we can get another hour of daylight. Winter time it gets dark here at 5ish. As for the NRL i rekon 3am is a better time. True not enough following it over A long time ago i think there was some club called the western reds.

I think the main argument against it is for two reasons:
1) Perth itself is not located in the best point of the Time Meridian, that is, if Perth was further east, it would work better for us 2) With respect to people living in the North, namely Canarvon all the way through to Kunnunura, the heat really is a complete bastard and any further exposure I believe is not welcomed by them. I think in this instance, you would really need to ask why Queensland and NT do not have DST? Laslty, a friend of mine was doing the stock broking thing many years ago. He actually really liked not having DST as everyone in his office would start an hour earlier (miss traffic into the city) and then go home an hour earlier (miss traffic out of city). |
