the actual sender for the dash gauge, well on my old ea anyway, was a big bulbous thing, about 3 times the size of that

ASW 102 SWITCH OIL PRESS, WITH OIL LIGHT $9.45

Your sender runs an oil pressure light and in the doc you got where it says to change the sender it is the forty to fifty dollar job mentioned above thats the right one. You have to tell them it's to run a guage (XR6 sender) incidently its the same sender right through the later models and range (6 & 8 cyl).

it was a switch. On the pack it said sender, and on the back it said it suits au falcons, fairlane and fairmonts. Which fairlane uses a switch?? Anyway can't get a sender in town today, do I need to run any extra wires when I hook it up?

you shouldn't have to run any extra wires, not sure if au's are different, but ea's only had one wire with a gauge

they are a b***h to get at, u need a 1'' deep socket to remove it. no spanners can get at it as there is limited room.

mate i just put an xr6 engine in my au .i'm having the oposite problem to you .my ecu won't read the pressure gauge sender thats in it .so i have to swap it with the switch style one as in the pics above ,that came on my original motor.
the xr6 one is about 3 times as long as the one in the pics above and its white and its also needs a bigger diameter spanner/sparkplug style socket to undo.its not an easy job.

Guys, remember that AU 1s came with proper, functioning gauges, whereas series 2+ got a dogdy guage, so you may find that series one Fortes use a switch, and series one XRs use a sender, but all series 2+ just use the switch.

Apparently in series 2 (can any series 2 owners confirm this), the gauge sweeps straight up to the 7 mark, and it's either there, or at 0, there is no in between, whereas series 1 sweeps back and forth just like a fuel gauge (I know from experience when my oil pressure was all over the shop).

The oil pressure sender on my AU2 Fairmont was leaking, I went to change it and noticed that it was only a switch. The guys in spare parts assured me id need the variable sender but when I showed them the car they agreed it was just a switch.

The gauge always reads about 3/4, I would assume if the gauge worked properly it would always read full with a switch installed not at 3/4

Mine used to read at 3/4 - around 7 (psi, I think). I think only the AU 1 XRs got the proper sender, everything else appears to be a switch only.

Good thing I will be getting myself a proper oil pressure gauge then ... will get myself a T-piece adaptor from Pirtek and run the factory switch and the aftermarket sender unit as well.

It's a PITA job too ... there's bugger all room ... either get to it from underneath ... or remove your entire intake and try and reach down through the side ... either way ... swearing is involved.

Hi Guys,

Just want to confirm that part number for the Oil Pressure Switch as I just got mine today for $50 from Harrison Ford in Melton.

EF 9D290 A

I'll also confirm that the oil sender is heaps longer (black portion after the octagonal screw) than the oil switch. At least two times longer, perhaps 2 and a half times.

If my internet hadn't been speed limited, I'd have posted a piccie.

Incidently, the torque setting for the switch/sender on both I6's and 8's is 20Nm.

Just waiting on the new cluster from NSW, should be here Tuesday I reckon, a few pin changes, pressure switch install and voila, Tickford dash up and running baby!

Yes, ok you can all tell I'm more than a little excited! This is a mod I've wanted to do to the wagon for a long time now. Not long to wait now.

Hopefully the pin changes will be easy enough, thanks to the doc from FordMods.

Cheers all.

GK

I used my neighbour's computer to upload this pic today.

Oil Pressure Sender

If you compare it to the oil switch pics earlier in the thread, you can see the considerable size difference!

Cheers,

GK

Yes that is correct, my xr8 series 1 oil gauge does exactly as mentioned, swings back and forth like a fuel gauge.

But in saying that, it usually sits around the 7 mark on the gauge itself when running around town.

I don't even remember changing the cluster on my old AU.
I miss that car, supercharged 6 with short diff gears and decent suspension, what a blast to drive.

I would think that’s for a EF/EL set up, AU uses a ASW102 I6 and V8
