Question Pluto No Longer A Planet

Don't know if anyone was watching the news this morning - and been trying to find out if this was true or one of those, just checking if you were listening or nots... But on the little news scroll bar, it said that Pluto has been dropped from our solar system??

Has anyone else heard this?? Not that it particularly bothers me, just interested to find out what that is about??

Here:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/plu...012703468.html

Apparently Pluto is just a big lump of ice, smaller than our moon. The scientists reckon its not worthy of being called a planety - its a "dwarf planet".

(Edit] EA2BA, you just beat me to it.

Pluto IS rather small(diam 2400klms) as is it's sister planet/moon Charon(diam 1200 klms)I'm not surprised it was rellocated..Some of our other planets moons would rival it..

Pluto says "wtf?"

Strange that pluto has been taken off the list. I saw an email comparing planet sizes a few weeks ago, and it listed a few planets that I didn't learn about in high school.

Also - $1 scratchie to anyone who can remember the stupid saying we all learnt in school to remember the order of the planets. It's been bugging me for at least 10 seconds now.

This is just discrimination against smaller planets - I for one will be fighting to have Pluto reinstated to its rightfuly place in the solar system ;)

Actually I do, I think it’s all really fascinating how with the advancements of technology we are able to study
The planets and stars and confirm the theory’s of scientists from hundreds of years ago.

Wow, gone a couple of hours and look what Ive missed!!! Me, I find the subject very good, I like outerspace, Im just not sure what to think about the whole Pluto subject. I mean, its still a planet right, just not a recognised one. Why would they have named it as a planet in the first place. Now I have just confused myself. I need beer.

Not fair... We had to remember the names of each one. We didn't get a fancy rhyme. :

So why did it get canned? Too small? Orbit of it and the moon not below the surface? Orbit around the sun too freaky? CBF naming everything else that would qualify as a planet if they didn't change the standards?
