Hi guys.

Im looking for a four cylinder OHV engine and auto trans. It needs to have the manifolds on the LHS.
Considering the escort etc 1600.

Is there much around (in Melb), or are these hard to find?

Go a 2000

A 1600 has the intake manifold on the LHS and is a OHV engine.

The 2000 intake is on the RHS and is a SOHC engine.

1600 are pretty easy to find as most people take them out and put the 2000 in. Make sure you get what they call a 711M block. The engine number/ID will be 711M.....BA (AA for 1.3 and BA for 1.6) Best way to make sure it's a 1.6. The 711M has a stronger bottom end and I would expect to pay $80-100 for a complete running standard engine.

AFAIK all the escorts had the same bellhousing bolt pattern so you can use any auto trans from a 1.3/1.6/2.0. Why do you want a auto? The auto trans might be harder to find as people tend to just ditch them.

Thanks lizard, thats just the sort of valuable info I need.

Im restoring a couple of Morris J type vans. One will be manual with the BMC engine, but the 'drive everyday' van may need to be automatic. I dont want an auto, but unfortunately my knee and hip joints are putting a good argument against a manual. My current EA fowlcan is my first ever auto. Thats the only reason for considering something other than the BMC engine.

An OHC engine woud be nice, but the van is very limited in width for the engine. It sits in the cab right next to your legs, and I want to keep the engine cowl as near orig as possible. There just not enough space for the wider engine.
The choices so far seem to be either Toyota R series OHV, Holden starfire (horrors), or Ford 1600.

So I guess some 'Wanted' ads in the Ford clubs might be the go?

Lizard .... the LH side of the car is the passenger side.... Been in the car trade for a long time and no one i know has ever said its the opposite ask the spare parts guys..

Ok well to clarify that the 1600 has the intake manifold on the drivers side and the 2000 is on the passengers.

Yes quite so guys. Its been a long time since I had an Escort, but I remember it well (now that Ive seen a pic on ebay). Its the cross flow eng. Might have to take a tape measure to one, but not looking good. Really need both manifolds on the pas side as the BMC eng has.

Sounds like what you need is the "pre crossflow" engine. This is found in mk1 cortinas and has both manifolds on the passenger side.

OK that sounds promising. I thought there was a non xflow in the mix somewhere. But what chance of getting one of those?

Thanks for that lizard. I will draw the plan layout, scan it & email to you. If you could then just check for feasibility, and if you recon its a go, I will find one & take a more critical look.

you can find engines easily as alot of people dont think escort and capris and cortinas are worth much.. i got my pinto 2.0 for $250 and its in amazing condition...and thats with the gearbox! my neighbour says the guy could have got triple that for it.
