Cummins hit with a $1.675 billion penalty for intentionally selling defeat devices that could bypass emissions sensors, a direct violation of the US Clean Air Act,
Vehicles affected include 2013 - 2023 RAM Trucks with Cummins diesel power-trains. https://jalopnik.com/cummins-hit-wit...nal-1851123885 I wonder if it's Stellantis or Cummins that is liable?

I'm curious as to exactly what these "defeat devices" were..... about the only way I can interpret any of the articles is that the "devices" could be as simple as not somehow preventing the ECU from being rewritten by anyone with suitable software and a laptop.
But that said, considering how fast hackers manage to crack the latest playstations, etc, I can imagine trying to keep tuners out of an ECU would result in 99% of an ECU's function being self preservation..... either that or someone would simply find a way of adapting a generic aftermarket ECU
