Default Petrol vs LPG

I heard comments that LPG wears the engine out sooner than petrol, is it true?

Yes.

Petrol lubricates, LPG doesn't.
Some people run external oil drippers to help prevent this.

yes its true .. if you have a push rod V8
a 6cyl E-series will not hurt it at all

a V8 will get a sticky valve quickly (maybe within 50,000 km ) and a I6 will last longer then the motor in general or the car

Flash lube is like the lead additive for older model vehicles that where built to run on leaded

OK, so I've got a 5.0 on LPG. So far I've done about 20,000km with no worries.

What exactly should I do?

CAbs do 500,000 km on a head easly..... Yup gas is realy bad:>

Gas lubricates the motor less and runs hotter and can eventually lead to valve problems in standard petrol motors (groosly exaggerated, like running ULP in a leaded car and can be solved by running a Upper head lubricant). LPG has a big upside as well in extending motor life leads a hell of a lot less carbonisation and does can help in extending the life of the bottom end of the motor.

Look at oil in a straight LPG motor after 10,000klms, the oil will be clean as all hell, the oil will eventually break down with the heat, but it still looks like honey.

Taxi's and Hire Cars are perfect examples, half a million kays on motors no probs, hire cars are similiar they have no problems getting 400,000 kays out of I6 and V8 NF/L/AU fairlanes. My e-gas falcon has over 110,000 klms on it now running nothing but LPG, and the motor is running as good as ever.

Lots of people here are going to tell you that LPG does not promote valve recession in the ford 6 motor, do yourself a favour and ring a few head reconditioning specialists and ask them and ask if they build heads different for LPG and why, you'll find they have a different opinion to the people here.

i used to work on gas and the problem is not with the gas its the people . if u have a car on gas at least run it once a week on petrol best way to maintain

What sort of minimum specs would you demand if you are building a dedicated LPG I6? (With highest compression possible 10-11:1?)

i've heard a few horror stories with LPG, even seen lots of damage/wear myself. Backfiring that blows up air boxes, accelerated wear on valve seats, I even seen a base from a Rochester carb that was melted from the heat/backfiring. I only run it on my cheap run-around cars cause its cheaper than petrol, i would stick to petrol for a performance machine. But at the same time it is a good fuel if you maintain the engine and take them extra precautions to make sure your engine doesnt crap it self eg drip lubrication systems, proper tune ups etc

350k on my lpg EL so far. It uses 1 litre of oil between my 10k oil changes, and the engine has never been touched. However the gas converter seems to require maintenance every 100k or so.

It has factory fitted duel fuel, and Ford indicate in their Car Manual that LONGER engine life can be expected running on gas

Factory fitted they changed to hardened valve seat, hardened valve, hardened piston & ring....

hi
Im thinking of puttong my ED on gas i read throught the posts but still undesided on what i should do. Ive herd that italian made gas converters are best suited to E series. so far it has only done 156,000. at the moment im uming and aring if i should make the change

what is your opinion

Wrong , some motors did get different rods , not many and how many ex govco cars as cabs do you think get rebuilds under 500k , alloy heads already have seats to require nothing to run on gas.

I would not Demand anything.. But I would like as much as I could

The Ford I6 motors would have to be one of the best motors to put gas onto .

As for backfireing .. that is a spark problem .. you should check/change your plugs every 40/50,000km anyway. and when you are nealy out of gas you do not put your foot to the floor as the Lack of gas will make it back fire as well ..

As for performance on L.P.G. .. you can get as much as you have on petrol.. if you set it up right.

Factory gas (tickford) setups would be the worst to have as they can not be adjusted. Deal with it anyway you want.. it will do the best the setup/tune will let it.

willieboy .. put your car on gas .. if your car is looked after it will be just as good on both and with less cost per km.

According to the info I got from a Ford mechanic, LPG does shorten the lifespan of engine. E-gas engines were modified to be able to run LPG, thus the longer lasting result.
